One such tradition for many families has been the open house at the Jarvie Ranch each December. The Jarvie Ranch is a national historic site operated by the Bureau of Land Management and is the site of a trading post from the 1800s. During the summer months visitors from all over the world tour the historic site, but in December the ranch takes on a special charm. Each year the ranch is decorated decorat-ed in great detail to depict Christmas in the 1880s. Weeks ahead of time the preparation begins. Evergreen boughs are cut and made into numerous wreaths and yards of garland. Nearly a hundred red bows are tied and all of the grounds and buildings soon look like they may have been decorated by John Jarvie himself. This year the open house will feature guided tours of the ranch as well as workshops each day on such topics as ornament making, holiday traditions from around the world, making festive decorations decora-tions from natural materials and even live music from local musi- If: Jarvie Ranch plans holiday celebration, innn,mi ' , r-l till cians. One of the events enjoyed by both young and old is decorating the wildlife tree. A large pinion is cut and placed in the middle of the historic site and visitors make ornaments throughout the day with bird seed and other treats for the wildlife to enjoy. Christmas tree tags are available avail-able for sale, there is a holiday book sale, horse drawn rides across the fields complete with sleigh bells and lots of hot spiced cider and cookies. There is even carol singing around a crackling fire along the river much the same as the Jarvie family may have done many years ago. This year the open house will be held Saturday, Dec. 13 and S.inday, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's a great time to enjoy the Browns Park in winter, view wildlife or just get into the holi day spirit and catch a glimpse of yesteryear. The event is free to the public and fun for all ages.
