Jan Bendardz, St James Catholic Church The Christian faith began under difficult circumstances and endured many persecutions. From the time that the first community of Christians, ar the believers in Jesus Christ were called, started to be conspicuous in the synagogues, the troubles began. St. Stephen was stoned to death, St. Paul was persecuted; perse-cuted; the early Christians fled throughout the Roman Empire and initiated their missionary work. In the year 64 A.D., Nero, the Roman Emperor, accused the Christians of causing disorder and launched a series of persecutions against them. For almost three centuries while the Christian community continued to grow, the authorities sometimes threatened and at other times openly open-ly persecuted them. It was only in 324 A.D. that the Emperor Constantine recognized Christianity and made it the official religion of the Roman Empire. To celebrate this event, he transformed the ancient Laterant Palace into a temple. The original palace was not a religious site but rather resembled a marketplace, much like a com- Correction The three dinosaurs standing in front of the Utah Field House, were incorrectly named. The Lateran Basilica, the Cathedral of Rome, is the first official Christian Church and would become the Pope's church for several centuries. Over the entrance we may read the inscription, "The Mother and Head of all Churches of the City and of the World." The situation has changed a great deal from that time of overt persecution perse-cution and the church has been able to multiply her presence throughout the world. However, this freedom to grow may present a false sense of security if we are not vigilant. No temple of stone may assure us of God's presence. The only true temple which we have at our disposal dis-posal is the body of the risen Christ. In commemorating the history of the Lateran Basilica, it is good to remember that situations can change, from the persecution of early Christians to being granted official religious status, to marginalization. Whether they be cathedrals, magnificent basilicas, churches, humble chapels or secret catacombs, the physical structure is not important. For Christians, the only temple is Jesus Christ.
