Show 12 Dinosaur Winter Wonderland Hockey entters third season by Harv Skjerven The Ashley Valley Hockey Association is preparing for its third season in its new facilities located at Western Park in Vernal. Starting out with a handful of boys and Al Brown, local cowboy cow-boy and hockey enthusiast, the association has grown to over 75 members in just 5 years. Weather permitting, the hockey hock-ey players hope to begin their 1997-98 season in early December, and culminating with a final tournament in early March. Players range in age from 8 to 50, and are broken into four age groups: Pee Wees, Bantams, High School and Adult. Although the teams are predominantly male, last year saw an increase in participation par-ticipation by local girls and more are planning to turn out this year. All four teams host games against area teams, and also travel trav-el out of town to compete in tournaments tour-naments and round-robin events. Last year, the area covered ranged from the Wasatch Front to I.rerr.mling, Colo., and as far north as Laramie, Wyo. Adult members mem-bers are also required to be members mem-bers of the United States Hockey Association, which is $25 annual- For newcomers to the sport, top quality skates and protective equipment is available to rent for very reasonable rates. All coaching coach-ing and referee staff is by local trained volunteers. The maintenance mainte-nance of the rink and facilities is provided by Western Park. Funds used in the past to purchase pur-chase equipment has been provided provid-ed by Uintah County Parks and Recreation Department., the Ute Tribe and private donations. The ice rink will once again be available this winter for public skating. Tentative plans also call for figure skating lessons to be provided by local instructors.
