Show Advisory Committee plans language program The Special Education Advisory Council held its monthly meeting Jan. 22. This committee concerns itself with the needs of handicapped and disabled students in the Uintah School District. The meeting was conducted by Kay Tassainer, committee co-chairman. Reporter for the meeting was Elaine Roberts. Mrs. Roberts is also the committee secretary. Frank Andreason introduced Cindy Broughers and Pat Campbell to the council. Cindy and Pat are resource teachers in the Uintah School District at the junior high school. They were guest speakers for the evening. They presented their views and expressed their desires for Uintah School District to incorporate a Language Core Program. The trial program would begin with the seventh grade. After an allotted period of time, the program would be studied. If the Language Core Program proves successful with the seventh grade, the program would then branch out and cover those grades vherr too children would benefit most. rhe L'.!'ji?.',e Core Program would ally resource students to function in a iegul.tr classroom with individual teach rs at appropriate levels. The program would be divided into three-hour three-hour blocks; teachers would rotate within the program. The Language Cere Program has been successful for the past eight years at Eastmont Middle School in the Jordan School District in Salt Lake City . A motion was made bv Louise John for the Advisory Committee to approve the program. The motion was seconded by Lloyn Winward. Marleen Harrison was welcomed as a new committee member. Marleen will serve on the pre school and elementary sub-committee. The general purpose of the subcommittees sub-committees are to help develop public awareness through their experience with the handicapped and disabled. The sub-committees were reviewed during the meeting. The sub-committees are as follows: 1) preschool, 2) elementary, elemen-tary, 3) junior and senior high, 4) accessibility. ac-cessibility. A film, "The Fortunate Few", was viewed by those attending the meeting. The purpose of the film was the importance im-portance of early diagnosis of the special problems with pre-school children. Committee members, in addition to discussing the language program, also conversed on the topics of grading techniques for handicapped and disabled students, correlation techniques for the core program between bet-ween junior and senior high schools, and the committee had discussions concerning curriculum development. "Pre school" is the subject matter tentatively planned for discussion during the February committee .meeting. The program will be presented by Gayle Drollinger.' |
