Thus spake Charlie Daniels during an on-air interview at KMOR last Wednesday. He was responding to a question concerning how the Charlie Daniels Band had liked the University of Utah facility the previous evening. Now wouldn't that be interesting: a live CDB album recorded at Kingsbury. Eat your heart out Framptom. The CDB plays loud! They are articulate in their loudness, mind you, but they are loud. Hearing them at Kingsbury was a treat, due both to the fact that they were picking and singing well, and that the separate instrumental entities were easily distinguishable. The latter is oftentimes easier said than done when high "db" music is involved. "After finally getting around" to reading the (Steinbeck) book, Charlie debuted his newest song "Grapes of Wrath" at the concert. The band, when not on tour is currently in rehearsals for their next album. The live music scene doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Last night (June 28), Lynard Skynard performed at the Salt Palace with "Richard Betts and Great Southern." Although the concert is after deadline and before this paper hits the streets, I feel confident to predict that it's some of the best good-time rock-and-rcll ever to hit Utah. This weekend (Thursday through Saturday) has the 2nd annual Golden Spike Old-Time Fiddle Contest and Folk Music Festival at Weber State in Ogden. Benny Thomasson, the father of "Texas style" fiddling and Dick Barrett, with at least four Wieser and many other titles behind him, will both be in attendance. Also performing will be Utah's own "Deseret String Band" and the "McLain Family Band." It's a beautiful festival. If you enjoy traditional American Music in an outdoor setting, take the short drive to Ogden through Weber Canyon. Joan Baez will be in concert at Snowbird on Thursday evening, July 7. Randy Montgomery of Snowbird also said other music is on tap at the "bird" including Mose Allison. by Greer Markle Sen. Hatch Attacks Kennecott Divestiture &l '-iillMIIIHMMi HIIMMI 7 Days a Week 6-10 weekdays 6-11 weekends iD0WN iUNDER private club PRIME RIB Friday, Saturday, Sunday 5-12 WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a speech on the floor of the United States Senate last week, Senator Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) called for hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee into the Federal Trade Commission's forced divestiture by Kennecott Copper Corporation of the Peabody Coal Company. The Senator from Utah called for the hearings based on his personal investigation of the FTC's role in the long (11-year) proceeding that may soon end with the sale of Peabody for $1.2 billion to a consortium of buyers. : Senator Hatch said, "I am very suspicious of the FTC's involvement in this divestiture and believe there has been a gross misuse of government powers by the Federal Trade Commission in this matter." In addition Hatch said, "I am also concerned, and have been led to believe, that a high-ranking official in the Nixon Administration may have used the FTC as an instrument of political reprisal against Kennecott for failure to contribute to the former President's reelection re-election committee." That reprisal resulted in the divestiture of the Peabody Coal Company. The Senator said the Nixon Administration's part in the FTC ruling is only rumor. but it is his feeling that the air must be cleared on the issue before the divestiture is allowed to go forward. With this in mind Hatch has requested that the chairman of the Antitrust and Monopoly Subcommittee, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) hold hearings on the divestiture. The Senator also pointed out in his speech that the consortium of companies planning to buy Peabody from Kennecott is composed of companies possessing the same characteristics stated by the FTC as the reasons for requiring the divestiture by Kennecott. Senator Hatch said, "The grounds for this divestiture are so ridiculous and unfounded that they cannot be justified, as far as I am concerned. I'm hopeful that hearings will get tn the bottom of this matter once and for all." Senator Hatch is of the opinion that the FTC made an incorrect decision when it called for the divestiture and is curious, after years of challenges and inquiries, why the Commission now refuses to review its decision. nnrrTrTBnriiir'ff"''' WASATCH BLUEBELL Mertensia hre vistyla Wats One of the most abundant wildflowers currently in bloom is the Wasatch bluebell. Its small bright blue blossoms measure only 'z to :14 inches wide. It is a common plant throughout the area of Southeastern Idaho, northern Utah, Southwestern Wyoming, and West Central Colorado. This plant was first described by Sereno Watson, a botanist who collected plants in the Wasatch range during 1870. The Wasatch bluebell begins to grow and flower as soon as the snow melts in the Spring and blossoms through July. It is easily identified by its small bright blue petals with dark centers ringed in light blue. EJ V. C.
