Show Wednesday, June 29, 1977 Truffaut, not bittersweet, but very heavy stuff,, really heavy." If one reads a quotation like that before going to see "Annie Hall", one is bound to be a bit apprehensive ap-prehensive about seeing the film. But seeing "An-nie "An-nie Half ' provi"des"reIief from the anxiety that Anierican is losing its formost comic, as the film is very much a comedy. It's not a typical laugh-a- minute Woody Allen film, but it is" a wonderfully humorous film. Hie pacing sets "Annie Hall" apart from his previous films. It is slower, more introspective, less hectic, more dramatic. Indeed the film seems to be the bittersweet effort that Allen insists in-sists he wants to avoid. Is it, as Allen claims, to help start paving the road for his more dramatic, intentions? It has always been Woody's style (I may call him Woody, may I not? ) to turn the joke back on himself, but now a new sense of pathos seems to be injected into the film. One senses that the film. is more autobiographical than before, and that the characters are more personal, more realistic portrayals. There are even scenes where the people are more pathetic than funny. Allen might not be pulling our leg after all. Typical criticisms of Allen's films have been that if you are not into New York neurotics who love the city, are terrible shy, and have intellectual intellec-tual discussions of death, one probably won't find his films funny. That's not quite true, as there is humor for everyone in his flicks. One just won't tind it as funny. One should go see a Mel Brooks production if one needs the obvious to get a laugh. It is also necessary to consider Diane Keaton's part in the film. Keaton is in danger of being sterotyped as an actress who can only play the bubble brain. "Annie Hall," while generally continuing con-tinuing that character, also demanded a broader range of talent that she has had to display .previously (not that Liv WJvm-lod't.'-serious rival in Keaton). . - - : ' V was a relief to find that "Auoe HaHV fe stSI ; America's foremost modern film huowrist'V was a relief to find that Annit Hall is stilj carrying on his brand of comedy, with just fine results as before. If Allen is serious (serious:; serious, dead serious) about leaving cMTrtd. .-.,: - Woody Allen claims that he wants to become a serious filmmaker. He has always been considered the most intellectual of all American comedians, but now he wants to move out of comedy into serious cinema. He feels his comedies are too trivial, that he must now move into drama to truely express himself . Just how serious is the new Woody Allen going to be? In an Esquire article, Woody described the type of film he wants to make as "serious serious, serious, and serious. Not middle serious, not like, ' " v.., 4, Hmmm, but what will it gain? v ., SELL WITH A M l ZJ f f CLASSIFIED! tv CPJU a mm total hair care salon Professional hair stylng for both men & women 649-9501 444 Majh JERRY FRKOVICH (OWNER) 1 New Day of Operation 1 Tuacriau thru C4filoi f wwwwa tin u ua (ui ua y PROFESSIONAL PICTURE FRAMING at reasonable prices.
