Show Page Eight - The Springville Herald - January 30, 1991 VclueSpeak he cliocola e chip solution to getting along by Joseph Walker A month or so ago my wife and I were sitting in a darkened dark-ened theater, trying to regain our composure after experiencing experi-encing Kevin Costner's brilliant bril-liant Western epic, "Dances With Wolves." Well, OK. Only one of us was struggling with composure. The other waited patiently, squeezing my hand reassuringly reassuring-ly from time to time. Yeah, that's right. I was the one who was out of control. In fact, I was so profoundly moved by the movie's powerful message that it was about 15 minutes before I could even speak. I suspect the current world situation had a lot to do with that. Not that there are a lot of parallels between the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and Costner's respectful portrayal of Native Americans and their frontier conflict with White settlers. But in my mind, the movie became even more poignant poi-gnant because of one basic question that can be applied equally to both the "Dances With Wolves" historical setting and to our war against Iraq: "Why can't people just get along with each other?" I guess that question has been on people's lips ever sincc.well, ever since people had lips. Can't you just imagine imag-ine Adam and Eve wearily posing the question to each other after a long day working in the garden? (Of course, in those days, Cain and Abel were just about the only other people, peo-ple, and we all know how that turned out). Shakespeare spent a lifetime writing plays that attempted in one way or another an-other to at least illustrate the question if not to answer it. And don't you think it flashed through George Washington's mind a time or two during that long winter at Valley Forge? So, it should come as no surprise when ordinary people like you and me struggle with the issue after a thought-provoking film or. a frightening evening watching the latest news from the latest example of mankind's inability to peacefully co-exist. And we wonder why it has to be this way, especially since we can remember the time when, as children, we could get along with just about anybody. What did we know then that we seem some how to have forgotten over the years? Quite a lot, as it turns out. At least, that's the way it seemed to me after I had a chance to discuss the. situation with a group of five- and six-year-olds at church last Sunday. Sun-day. I visited their class because be-cause I was concerned about how they were dealing with the frightening turn of world events. And as it turned out, I did most of the learning from their simple, direct approach to human relationships. Saddam must be very angry," an-gry," observed Benjamin, who then added: "Or maybe he just isn't happy. Has someone been mean to him?" Children understand anger. They've seen it and they've experienced it. They even understand un-derstand fighting. They just don't understand carrying a grudge around. They get angry, an-gry, they fight and then they forget about it. : "Did someone tell him he should stop?" Vanessa wanted to know. When- informed that yes, indeed he had been warned, she pressed on. "Well, did someone tell his mom?" I told her I wasn't sure, but I assumed Saddam's mother knew what her son was up to. Jhat wasn't good enough for yancssa. "Someone should tell his mom," she said. "She would make him stop." But what if she couldn't? "What if all the warnings from all of the moms in the Middle East couldn't stop Saddam from doing mean things. Then what? ; "Invite him to your house so you can be better friends," said J.B. "Make something nice for him," said Melissa. "Tell him you won't play with him if he doesn't stop hurting people," said tiffany. "Share your cookies with him," said Ashley. "That's what I do." OK, OK so maybe it's a little late for that as far as the current crisis is concerned. But perhaps the next crisis can be avoided if we adults learn a little something from our children. chil-dren. That means all of us not just the decision-makers. We've got to stop thinking in terms of "friends" and "enemies." "ene-mies." Rather, like children, we've got to start looking at everyone as potential pals. Reach out to all people with acceptance and consideration. Try tog et. to know and understand under-stand them better. Respect differences and embrace commonality. com-monality. And if everything else fails, break out the chocolate chips. Right now they have a display about author Patricia Mac-Lachlan Mac-Lachlan and her award-winning books; especially her winner win-ner of the 1986 Newberry Award, "Sarah, Plain and Tall." Usually it takes decades before a book becomes a "classic." "clas-sic." With "Sarah, Plain and Tall", however, it happened almost overnight. Published in 1985, the book has deeply affected af-fected the millions of children and adults who have read it. Springville Children's Librarian Li-brarian Lanell Reeder says that they have received word that this enchanting story has been made into a television, Hallmark Hall-mark Hall of Fame movie and will be aired on Sunday, February Feb-ruary 3. Check your TV guide for time. Four years ago, while recording re-cording "Sarah, Plain and Tall," for Books on Tape, Glenn Close joined the legions of Sarah fans; she subsequently acquired television rights to the heartwarming story and is one of the film's executive producers produc-ers and stars as Sarah. "The whole family will like this story," says Reeder. It is about two children and their father who need a mother and a wife. studio, at times employing as many as 50' men as assistants. He made sketches for the statues and supervised his assistants, but he always gave the final touch to all of his works himself. The rich, the learned, princes and kings, even the Pope came to his studio and commissioned works. When he returned to Denmark his works were acknowledged masterpieces all over Europe. Eva Henschen, curator of the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, says many stories sto-ries have been told about the outstretched arms of the clay model of the Christus sinking sink-ing overnight. These are simply sim-ply myths. The artist made careful drawings before he began his sculpture. HOBBLE CREEK STAKE SIXTH WARD Sacrament Meeting 11:30 Sunday School. Their house on the prairie is quiet now, and Papa doesn't sing anymore. Then Papa puts an ad in the paper, asking for a wife, and he receives a letter from one Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton, of Maine. Papa, Anna and Caleb write back. Caleb asks if she sings. Sarah decides to come for a month. She writes Papa: "I will come by train. I will wear a yellow bonnet. I am plain and tall," and "Tell them I sing." Anna and Caleb wait and wonder. won-der. Will Sarah be nice? Will she like them? Will she stay? The School Library Journal says this is, "A book filled with wisdom, gentle humor and the practical concerns necessary for a satisfying life. Terse writing and poetic rhythm flow to create a tender story about the fragile beginnings of a family relationship on its way to permanence." Other books by MacLachlan are, "Arthur, For the Very First Time," "Cassie Binegar," "The Facts and Fictions of Minna Pratt," and "Through Grandpa's Eyes." The 11 -foot high reproduction repro-duction of the famous depiction depic-tion of the resurrected Jesus Christ was placed in the North Visitors Center on Temple Square in 1962. It was cut from once piece of white Cararra marble by Italian sculptor Aldo Re-bechi. Re-bechi. A woman visiting from California summed up the feelings of many: "The Christus Chris-tus is so utterly unbelievable. It gives you such a warm feeling inside."
