Photo by Charles Lowery J)evils lose bizarre game to Pineview In a very unevenly officiated officiat-ed game, the Springville Red Devils dropped a heart breaker to the Pineview Panthers 53-50. 53-50. The Panthers fell behind 10-8 after one quarter, and were forced to play catch-up the whole game. "; ( The Red Devils led 24-20 at the half, and built a 12-point advantage 36-24 with 3:36 left in the third period. Going into the fourth quarter, quar-ter, the score was 38-33, Springville. Then, midway in ! the fourth period, with the !. Panthers still trailing 45-39, 3; Pineview rallied to outscore the 2; Devils 8-3 in a two-minute ; span. A time out was called with i 2:47 to play. On the ensuing inbound play, Pineview was given the ball while Springville was still in its huddle. Officials thought the teams were given the full minute for the time out. A Panther player hit an uncontested lay-up to put Pineview up 49-48, while the Springville bench stood "shocked. The Devils then hit a two-pointer to regain the lead 50-49. At that point, the game was stopped and a heated discussion dis-cussion was held pertaining to the earlier inbound play and lay-up. A decision to return to the 2:47 mark and start the game from there was made. In a see-saw battle, Pineview Pine-view came out victorious. The Devils were led by Andy Cro-shaw's Cro-shaw's 16 points and Matt Day bell's 10. Devils defeat Dixie 6S-S6 Junior Todd Frischknecht, filling in for Sam Lee who was recovering from the flu, was the key in Springvillc's 65-56 win over Dixie, and scored 19 points. Both teams battled back and forth, but the Devils took a 25-48 25-48 lead just before the half. Still in good shape at 30-22, they were leading a minute jnto the second half. The Flyers Fly-ers came back to take a shortlived short-lived lead, but Andy Croshaw returned to the Springville lineup despite three fouls and helped the Devils with a 15-3 run. Trying to play catch-up forced Dixie into foul trouble, and enabled Springville to get the nine-point final margin at the free-throw line, ending the game 65-56. Todd Frischknecht was high scorer with 19. He was followed foll-owed by Croshaw with 1 1 , Matt Daybell, 10; Johnny Ave-rctt, Ave-rctt, 9 and Paul Miner, 9. Matt Hall tallied 7. Lady Devil by Jessica Black Wow! The Lady Red Devils are doing it again. The Devils have a 1 3-2 record and continue contin-ue to dominate Region 8 with 5-0 stats. On Tuesday the Lady Devils hosted Payson. Springville started off slow, but after the first half they went to work to easily down the Lady Lions 61-38. . Tara Houtz played an excellent excel-lent game scoring 20 pts". and getting 6 rebounds. Julie Kirby and Freshman Dcde Childs netted 12 pts. apiece. Stacey MacArthur added 9 pts. and Mary Ellen Stover had 4 pts. On Friday, the Lady Devils went down to Dixie to play the Lady Flyers. It was a tough game, but free throws and fast breaks put the Devils on top 41-35. Stover led all scorers with 15 pts. Houtz had 10 pts. while Kirby and MacArthur had 7 pts. apiece. The Lady Devils are averaging aver-aging 54.9 pts. a game, while allowing only 45.1 pts. to their opponents. Team Captain Stover Sto-ver says, "It is the team's defense de-fense that has gotten us where we are." The Lady Devils play Cedar City at home on Friday. Junior Varsity is at 5:30 p.m., Varsity at 7:1 5 p.m. "junior forward Todd Frischknecht Frisch-knecht is the SHS Basketball Spotlight Player of the Week. He is the son of John and Susan Frischknecht and grandson of Kay and Jean Frischknecht of Manti and Ralph and Ida Jensen of Provo. Todd's favorite subjects are physiology and English where he maintains, a 3.7 (JPA. He plans to attend BYU. His hobbles are hunting and camping. He also plays football foot-ball and baseball at SHS and was vice-president of . his sophomore class. The tallest trees grow Junior center Kevin Staheli is the SHS Basketball Spotlight Player of the Week. He is the son of Mel and Elaine Staheli and the grandson of Ann Dunn of Ogden. He is the youngest of eight children. His favorite subject in school is PE and he hopes to attend BYU. His hobbies include hunting, camping, fishing and water skiing. He also likes to run track . ' . Photo by Dennis Gore I Red Devils beat Payson in overtime Jumping all over Payson in the first half, Springville frustrated frus-trated the Lions outside shooting shoot-ing game. Building up a 16-point 16-point lead at one time, the Devils took a 32-18 lead into the locker room. Coach Mark Bake warned the Springville team that Pay-son Pay-son would come out shooting hard, and that's just what they did, by tying the score and then taking the lead 42-41 with 2:03 left in the third period. k Red Devil Sam Lee scored a crucial basket that kept the Lions from winning, and then one minute later, Todd Frischknecht Frisch-knecht scored on a fast break for Springville to regain the lead at 62-61. The game seesawed see-sawed back and forth, but Johnny Averett, Andy Croshaw Cro-shaw and Matt Daybell scored to give Springville a 66-63 lead with just 1:1 1 i left. The game went into overtime over-time when Payson's DeGraf-fenried DeGraf-fenried hit two free throws with 19 seconds left in the game. Springville's defense helped to then turn the ball over, and Andy Croshaw's bucket gave the Devils the lead. Payson was forced to foul, but fouled the wrong people. Johnny Averett made four free throws in a row, and Croshaw sank two. i As time ran out, the Devils came out on top 77-69. Croshaw had a career and game high 27 points. Averett had 17, followed by Daybell with 8. Sam Lee tallied 6, Todd Frischknecht, 6; Paul Miner, 5; Kevin Staheli, 4; Matt Hall, 2 and John Penrod, 2.
