The Salt Lake City International Airport wetlands mitigation plan has won a Grand Award for engineering excellence from the Consulting Engineers Council of Utah. The award was presented to The Sear-Brown Group, an engineering and planning firm with local offices on East Parley's Way in Salt Lake City. Sear-Brown developed the plan and coordinated a complex approval process by federal, state and local agencies and community groups. The mitigation plan calls for one of the largest wetlands replacement projects ever undertaken in the United States. When construction is completed in 1994, more than 465 acres of various wetland communities will be replicated, replacing more than 339 acres of wetlands associated with new construction at the Salt Lake City airport. The various wetland communities com-munities will replace habitat on a site slated for construction of a third airport runway. The 12,000-foot 12,000-foot runway, a key element in long term expansion plans for the airport, will double the current instrument approach capacity and eliminate anticipated delays of 192,000 hours annually. The mitigation site consists of 1,500 acres west of the proposed runway area. The plan calls for construction of a complex ecosystem to sustain hundreds of aquatic and terrestrial plant and animal species present on the runway site and ' surrounding wetlands. Theproject is notable not only for its size, but for the complexity of the environment it is required to replace. The firm received the award for engineering excellence during ceremonies on February 20th in ; Salt Lake City. The project is now entered in a national competition sponsored by the American Consulting Engineers Council. Many wetland mitigation pro- jects involve waterfowl refuges i and are typically dominated by ! dikes impounding shallow ponds ! and reed-filled marshes. This , i project requires similar open water ; habitat, but also includes a ix of ! mudflat, salt-grass meadow, marsh ! and upland communities. The new ! habitat will be home to a wide I range of species in all stages of ; their life histories (breeding, i nesting, feeding, resting). It calls for 135 acres of large open water area for various species of ducks and fish; 110 acres of mudflats and playas for shorebirds; and 135 acres of marsh areas for nesting, breeding and feeding purposes for numerous birds and muskrats. A minimum of 85 acres of wet meadow areas will direcdy and indirectly develop as a result of this project. Significantly, the plan would more than replace the community types as well a? functions and values lost on the runway expansion site, but in a more contiguous environment than on the existing expansion site.
