Show The Park Record Section C Thursday, March 1 8, 1 993 Page C3 5w Snow-covered fields threaten spring sports In Parte City this year, "spring sports" may be an oxymoron. At a time when the spring teams at Park City High School are supposed to be outside practicing, the athletic fields at the school are still covered by more than a foot of snow and, as of March 15, another winter storm advisory has been issued. With the first contests of the season scheduled for late March and early April, the Miner soccer, Softball, baseball, track, tennis and golf teams have been forced to practice inside the building or not at all. "Everyone is practicing indoors, and trying to make arrangements to go down to Salt Lake City," said Park City High School Principal Mike Andrews, who added that each team at the high school will be provided with transportation for four practice days in the valley. But even with the buses provided, the team's coaches still face the daunting task of lining up practice fields at other schools. At the high school, teams take turns using the gym, where the practices barely approximate the real thing. "It's an unreal situation," said Andrews. "If the first time they see an outdoor field is the first time they play a game, they're at a distinct disadvantage." Not all teams have been hindered to the same degree. The track team has been able to run on the roads around town and on the inside lanes of the track, which "i in i i 1mm -j-V V 1 , -iff . , ; You can't cross a river in two strides. (Practice for the field events has been limited, however.) And the tennis team has been able to log some time on the indoor courts at the Park City Racquet Club. But the scheduling of games, especially for the baseball and softball programs, becomes more of a problem with each passing day. Some schools in the region have discussed dropping baseball and softball this spring. Park City is working to reschedule contests in those sports. "I just don't know if we're going to get a season in," Andrews lamented. "All of our games until the end of April we're scheduling in Salt Lake, or we're traveling south." The athletes at Park City High School can take solace in the fact that they're not alone--the fields at rival schools Wasatch, North Summit, South Summit and Morgan are also buried. And the skiing is fine. Skinner captures g.s. at nationals Bill Skinner set a fine example for the Park City Masters Ski Team at the U.S. Masters Alpine Championships. The coach of the Park City Masters finished first in his class (35-39) in the giant slalom at the championships March 10 in Jackson Hole. Skinner won both runs to lead a 1-2-3 sweep by Intermoun-tain Intermoun-tain racers in the contest. Nick Maricich was second, and Marlin Ross of Park City was third. Skinner also finished seventh in the downhill. A feU in the slalom eliminated him, from contention for the overall crown. " The win irilgiant slalom was the first national championship for Skinner after three runner-up finishes at other Masters nationals. "All I've been working on this year is trying to learn g.s." he said. "That's always been my weak event." "I've been working out for the first time in my life...I did everything I could do," added Skinner, a former member of the University of Utah ski team.
