J. Toomy, two prominent c itizens of Deer .Lodge, wer visitors in Butte last week. Miss Mary Cooney, who pased away in this city last week, was just emerging emerg-ing from girl hood. She was a most estimable young person, and her untimely un-timely death was a great shock to her reiatives and caused much sorrow to her numerous friends and acquaintances. acquaint-ances. The funeral took place on last Thursday from the residence of Martin Connelly, the uncle of the deceased, at ."CO East Galena street.- Miss Cooney was IS years of -age. For three years 1 she and her brother Thomas have lived with their uncle and aunt in Butfe. Miss Cooney -was a "native of j Pennsylvania where she leaves a mother, two sisters and' a brother to mourn her loss. The funeral services were at Sacred Heart church. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. The pallbearers were: Michael McAndrews, Thomas Morris-sey. Morris-sey. Patrick McHugh. John Conley, Michael Morrin and Patrick McCarthy. I HELENA, MONT., There was a considerable gain in the Catholic population in Montana, during dur-ing the year 1!03, as shown by, the report re-port of the Kev. Father Victor Day, administrator of the diocese of Helena, which has just been forwarded to the Vatican at Rome. The exact population popula-tion was not given, as several of the, parishes failed to send in their report to the administrator, but the Kev. fFather Day says that the total population popu-lation is undoubtedly in excess of 50,-"00. 50,-"00. Nearly I'o.OOO of these live in Butte. The two strongest' parishes are in Butte, while Helena ranks third. Helena Hel-ena has 2.S00 Catholics. Last year 87 children and ."3 adults were baptized in Helena; there were 62 funerals and SS persons were confirmed. During the year there were 51 marriages in the Helena church. At Easter 1,150 Catholics Cath-olics took 'communion. There Were 575" children in the parish schools at the close of the year. In St. Patrick's parish, Butte, by far the strongest parish in the state, "there are 5,000 Catholics. St. Mary's par-I par-I ish and the parish of the Sacred Heart have each 2.500 Catholics. In the four parishes reported in Butte there were 321 burials. For the year 204 marriages mar-riages were reported in the four -parishes. At the end of the year there were 2.300 Catholics in Great Falls parish. There were during the year 154 baptisms bap-tisms in the Great Falls church, 66 burials, SI confirmations and 39 marriages. mar-riages. liev. Father Day has received no intimation in-timation as to when the late Bishop Brondel's successor will be announced. The college of the propaganda at Rome is now in a vacation of two weeks, and an announcement of the selection of a bishop is not expected before its sessions are resumed. ANACONDA, MONT. In a manner that will long be remembered re-membered by many residents of Anaconda Ana-conda and other cities of the state, the Anaconda council of the Knights of Columbus was initiated with appropriate appro-priate services here Sunday, which were followed, at night, bv a sumptuous sumptu-ous banquet at the Montana hotel. During the morning a special train arrived in the city, having on board several hundred residents from Butte and may from other Montana citi-js. Following the arrival of the special in the city the members of the Anaconda Ana-conda lodge and the visitors proceeded I to saint Paul's church to attend services ser-vices there. Beginning at 1 o'clock in the afternoon after-noon the work of initiating members into the order was undertaken. Abo.it sixty members, including fifteen from the Butte council, received degrees, the first and second degrees being conferred con-ferred by the Butte -coue.il- and the third degree by C. P. Connelly, territorial ter-ritorial deputy, assisted by officers from eastern councils. The lodge work took up the greater portion of the afternoon. When finally the work of starting the Anaconda branch of the order, on what is conscientiously believed by all connected with it, to be its career of success, the visitors, to the city and their Anaconda hosts sat down to enjoy en-joy a banquet at the Montana hotel, served as only that famous hostelry can serve one. - ' Every one present received a souvenir souv-enir menu. On the cover, of each mend, was a half tone reproduction of the Washoe smelter and the words: "Initiatory "Ini-tiatory Banquet, Anaconda ' Council, Knights of Columbus." - 1 j i-oiiowing the date was a small picture pic-ture of the Montana hotel. The first inside page was devoted to the courses of the banquet, the various dishes being be-ing grouped under one title: "The Feast." " - . Fnder the caption of. "The Flow," appeared the programme of toasts? and responses. Colonel T. O'Leary, of the Anaconda council, .was tnastmaster, and he ably filled his position. The colonel was in his happiest vein and his remarks started the banquet off in the proper spirit. Every speaker who was called on ably filled the part assigned as-signed to him and some-able oratory was furnished for the enjoyment of the guests.
