Show A6 DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday, August 24, 1993 40 million Americans suffer from allergies If you are one of the 40 million Americans troubled by seasonal allergic rhinitis, prepare to retaliate against the most common enemies of allergy sufferers in western North America -- - ragweed, tumbleweed and sagebrush. These pollen producing weed plants typically abound during and the autumn. Between mid-Jul- y season's first frost, ragweed is the cause of widespread allergy misery. In fact, these pollens are so prevalent during these months', there is a 75 percent chance that if you are an allergy sufferer, these are the culprits. Just one ragweed plant can release as many as one billion grains of pollen. This news may be especially disheartening for allergy sufferers, since ragweed causes one of the highest rates of reactivity individual all among pollen allergens. There are several types of ragweed including western, short and giant plants. Together with tumbleweed and sage, these cause more sneezing, congestion and itchy, watery eyes than all other plants combined. At one time, ragweed plants were found solely along riverbanks, Senior events A schedule of events at the Golden Years Center, 726 S. 100 E., follows. Construction and developed land has led to the growth of ragweed in areas closer to home -along highways, construction sites, parking lots, and even back yards. Based on weather and climatic conditions, it is possible to assess the level of ragweed pollen that will proliferate in a specific region. Weekly pollen forecasts are available to allergy sufferers in 50 cities nationwide through a unique service provided by Marion Merrell Dow Inc., makers of leading products. Callers can obtain anti-aller- information about local pollen levels for the upcoming week by dialing 1 Predicted ragweed levels are, in part, based on weather conditions such as temperature, rainfall and wind. For example, heavy spring rainfalls followed by a hot dry summer is the most favorable condition for ragweed plant growth. Conversely, excessive rainfall and humidity above 70 percent during summer tends to decrease ragweed plant growth. Ragweed pollen can travel up to 500 miles, especially on hot and dry, windy days. Rainy or damp days will keep ragweed pollens closer to the ground and out of the air, offering some relief for sufferers. Many allergy sufferers rely on "traditional" antihistamines, many can be purchased (OTC). Introduced in the early 1940s, these antihistamines of which er Your tomatoes aren't ripening like normal? Don't worry, they're normal. The weather's not. "Never in my history as an Extension horticulturist have I had so many questions as to why tomatoes are not ripening," said Larry Sagers, Utah State University Extension agent in Salt Lake County. Blame it on the unusual weather patterns, he said. Tomatoes are a warm season crop and require warm temperatures. This year has not been particularly conducive to good tomato fruit set. In most cases, both day and night temperatures have been too cool, according to Sagers. 1 "Tomato plants that sit in the garden when night temperatures don't get to 55 degrees for several hours simply sulk and refuse to set any fruit," he said. The average lows for July were only 56 degrees. That means many of the nights have been cooler than the 55 degree minimum needed to set fruit, Sagers said. Cool nights have also caused the blossoms to drop on several occasions. The blossoms open, but the pollen that germinates takes so long to fertilize the plant that the ' n effects such as sedation and slowed reaction time, as well as impaired judgment and concentration. Allergy sufferers may benefit from consulting a physician about newer, non sedating antihistamines that do not readily cross the "Blood-brai- n barrier" and therefore, do not cause impairing side effects. Frederick's Introduced worldwide more than ten years ago, terfenadine (brand name Seldane), the first non sedating antihistamine, revolutionized the way allergies were treated. Today, many allergists recommend non sedating antihistamines for allergy sufferers who are bothered by the impairing side effects caused by OTC products. Your physician can prescribe the best course for treatment and determine whether pollen is the cause of your allergy symptoms.
