All adults and children should have a plan to escape their home in the event of fire. A meeting place outside the home for all family members should be established. Planning alternative exit routes from the home should also be planned. Most fire deaths in dwellings usually occur at night when everyone is asleep. Sleeping family members become quickly disoriented, even in their own homes due to smoke, heat, fire and emergency situations. Think about how everyone will get out safely from various exit routes and dont forget to have a central meeting place so that all ' family members can be accounted for. On Oct. 29, Daylight Saving Time ends and clocks are set back one hour. This is a perfect time to replace the batteries in smoke detectors and test the detectors to ensure they are working properly. The Hill Fire Department plans on many activities for this years Fire Prevention Week. We are planning an open house the entire week Oct. for tours of the Fire Station (Bldg. 9) from 9 a.m.-- 4 p.m. daily. Other activities include free check of child safety seats, free fire safety handouts and gifts, and visits from clowns, Smokey the Bear, Sparky the Fire Dog and Pluggy the Talking Fire Hydrant. The department is also providing fire extinguisher training and facility evacuations upon request. The Hill Fire Department wants you to enjoy the festivities of the week and wants to remind you to be fire safe the other 51 weeks of the year too. Below are some fire safety tips to help you protect your family and property. Never store gasolipe anywhere in your home. Always check your smoke detector monthly.
