enthusiastic time was indulged in at alie primary last night at the fight ward which convened in alse first schoolhouse alie meeting wai called to order by S S jones chairman of alie central committee wm H elected chairman an 1 alico M Samuels was elected tiie cill for the meeting aa published in the DULY ENQUIRE K were read by alie t john B dilner said eliat he would like some general expression from the voters present as to how they would like alie affairs of this municipality conducted for alio nest two eais the peoples party was in favor of u conservative and economical go eminent in contra distine tion to alie liberal party which vas in favor of booms and inflated prices of real estate and high taxation the speaker submitted the following resolution resolved that it ia the of this primary eliat alie policy of the peoples party adopted last august embodied in the phrase progress and economy be the platform upon which the delegates to the convention are to be elected this resolution was put to ate and carried unanimously on motion of thomas thurman the meeting proceeded to alie election of delegates A motion that the voting be viva voce was carried i M L nominated chaa D glazier george taylor nominated aeed smoot theo M samuelson nominated S S jones james E daniels nominated thomas E thurman john strong nominated J W duff niels joanson nominated james E I 1 daniels i S S jones nominated james gray ledru loveridge moved that two al at barge be elected carried M L pratt and theo M samuelson were elected alie delegates were requested to give their views on the liquor question as to prohibition or high license and strict regulations the general sentiment was that prohibition hibi tion is impracticable under existing conditions hence the next best we could do was to license under strict regulations ions hon W H king was requested to give a speech on municipal government the gentleman ably responded hon john B milner wag called on and responded thanking the meeting for so grandly sustaining the principles of the good old party requested all good citizens to assist the officers in the enforcement of the laws on the liquor question etc meeting adjourned sine die SECOND WABD As 7 lat the large assembly room of tha west schoolhouse was crowded with taxpayers the meeting afta called to order by jas F dunn john C graham was elected chairman of the meeting which he acknowledged in a neat little speech james hardy was elected secretary and evan aride chaplain after prayer by the chaplain th chair rad the call for this meet ine jas F dunn of the central commit mitte made a few preliminary remarks in which he stated that the action of the caucus held wednesday night jin voting for delegates did not meet with the central committees views the meeting was addressed an the same subject by chairman graham A A eggertsen and others jas H wallis then moved that irrespective et any caucus selections that we now proceed to the election of delegates the motion was seconded and carried on of E C Hondrick aen the delegates were elected in the following manner one from from each tier ot blocks running then ensued some discussion as to the manner of voting resulting in the tive voce method the following delegates were aca elected john C graham geo thatcher alex aukins andrew eggertsen R G Ki Awood james F dunn and bent joanson Job alie then proceeded to the election of the following alternates A greenhalgh james B wallia E C hendricksen ii E eggertsen W R H S S bailey and canby scott on motion of A greenhalgh the meeting then proceeded to instruct the delegates geo T pearin Pe ayin oratorical tones proceeded to instruct them according to his ideas city officers should bo the servants of abo people and not their masters applause he was followed by E C hendricksen who considered that this was the proper place to instruct the delegates walter scott desired to impress upon the delegates the necessity of having city officers who would enforce the ordinances din ances and do away with the whiskey dens and grog abe greenhalgh was of the opinion that we should havo officers who could devote their time to the interest of the people A J stewart thought that the ordinances as passed by the city council should be strictly enforced therefore we need a good city marshal one part of the chiy should not bo built up at the expense of another wm A mccullough suggested that the city marshal and police receive sufficient salary to devote all their lime t rooting out the evils that exist in town W cox was in favor of the citizens setting a good and sustaining our officers alexander wilkens tiled that he had been an officer for seven years and he knew that alie city officers could do nothing unac alipy ere backed up by the citizens R C endorsed the remarks of ahr i evious speakers logan holdaway did not think that aloon keepers had any conscience or they would not sell liquor to minors i and bieak alie liw in other ways jumas H wallis then offered the following resolution resolved that reposing alie greatest confidence in the delegates we have elected tonight to night that they go to the convention and nominate men for city officers whom they consider will work faithfully for abe people and for the morality aud prosperity of the city and that we as citizens and taxpayers civo tho men they nominate our moral hearty and financial support the motion was unanimously adopted th e meeting alien adjourned sine die THIRD WABD the primary meeting of the peoples parl of the third municipal ward was held in lie third ward assembly rooms wm H brown called the meeting to order and stated the object ortho meet in myron tanner was unanimously elet 1 t ed chairman and john D dison secre j tiry the secretary then read the call I 1 ia published in THE DILY and the chair stated that for delegates were in order on motion of R J dusdale myron tanner haq iy ay elected the first delegate on motion of samuel Liddiard Jorgen evansen was unanimously elected a delegate dele gete air W II 11 brown liere arose to make a nomination hut thought that those j present should discuss the policy the wished pursue 1 in the future did not believe that MO should instruct ates how to act but we should elect man as delegates with abod judgment who will chose such officers as are trus man to the cause of the peoples party to hold the reins of our future city government ern ment he then placed in nomination the name of J W hoover jr as delegate who nas elected on motion ef D P felt T N taylor was unanimously elected a delegate on motion of ahna brown W S was unanimously elected the fifth delegate on motion of jorgan aquilla collius ati i unanimously elected the irth delegate jos white nominated julin A brown as the delegate at large but mr brown requested to be excused on the grounds that lie was a member of alie present cita council and not to act on motion of edmund stewart john M holdaway Holda wiy vaa unanimously elected it was suggested sus by r H brown eliat three alternates be elected to lill any vacancy that might occur in alie corps of delegates with the understanding der standing that alie first named fills the first vacancy and so on numerically numer cally the following alternates were unanimously elected john E lewis frank perry john lewis the chair said the meeting was open for the speeches on the and policy of our cita government and culled upon W II 11 bawn mr brown responded and said the peoples party has an issue on their bands and quoted tho remark at heart who would be impartial and energetic in suppressing and uprooting evil he called on the members of alie Pe oplas party to come out en mas masatto aeto vote on the of february our opponents are up and doing and we should see to it that we are alive to our rights and duties we should study the principles of our party we want to become true politicians take the great leaders ot our nation as washington jellerson Jef lerson and others they were among the best politicians the world ever produced he did not wish to censure the present city officers but he did want to see a mayor who would be alive to his duty did not want to eee a boom mayor nor a boom council he wanted to see a marshal that would have a firm and flinty face against lawlessness and crush out everything that conflicted with our laws by all means be wise and work so that we will not cause any or division in our ranks but choose wise conservative men I 1 say to the peoples party give us such government that the liberal party will grow but very slowly samuel liddiard was next called for he endorsed aliat had been said in fact be eulogized the speech made by mr brown and said the next tl ing was for ui to put it in practice he did not think we should go to extremes either way should move onward and upward steady and sure and when improvements were made it would be for the benefit of alt good honest true men would nut be partial but take into consideration eliat is best for the good of all he hoped whoever the men might be alio are to take charge of our i city government in the future that j they would be men free from partiality parta lity and who would work for the best good of alie community jolin A brown was then called for he was like mr liddiard not much of a public speaker but hoped the delegates would good honest conser vatie men jorgen hansen endorsed what had been said he was a member of the Feo plea party and expected to remain so ue anted to see men put in office that would uee tho public funda for the best good of the citizens booms are the forerunner of hardship to the people and hence he trusted the delegates would be united and select such men as would ork for alie welfare of the people alie meeting then adjourned sine die WARD the central schoolhouse must have held men last night all ready to take part in the primary business the meeting was called to order by joseph B keeler who was also elected chairman john 11 was elected secretary the election of delegates was immediately proceeded resulting as follows john W turner alexander gil lempio J B keeler W S corbett W D roberts L A wilson J W howe then came the election of alternates J R boshard J K J S fawcett J B bean H S pyne john devoy G W gee joseph B keeler introduced the following resolution which was adopted resolved that we the taxpayers and voters of this ward are not in favor of high taxation or an extravagant trava gant expenditure of revenue but that we are in favor of an economic and judicious outlay of public funds consistent avith a steady and permanent crowth of our city resolved that we insist on the rheid enforcement of the license law for the sale of liquor or else the repeal thereof with a prohibition law in its stead resolved that we encourage in every legitimate way our agricultural and manufacturing interests mr keeler remarked that in view of oom in provo there would be a temptation to raise taxes to keep pace with it house building and land speculation ula tion of themselves wera not conducive to the permanent growth of our city we should foster such enterprises that add to solid improvement by developing our latent resources such in fact that give employment to the many he thought that th small householder should not be forced to pay heavy taxes for the benefit of the few wm M egan thought that the city council would be capable to regulate taxes without instructions from citizens and taxpayers the dog tax law said dugdale had been most rigidly enforced eo that now there was scarcely a dog ifft to bark or wag his tail let the liquor law be a strenuously enforced by our city executives make the pay their license in cash instead of scrip W D roberts spoke in favor of the resolutions he said he would like to see a law pass requiring saloons to be removed at a considerable distance from houses of worship and schools john W turner favored the resolutions advocated the strictest enforcement of alie laws especially the liquor law gambling hells should broken up at any cost even to the expenditure of every dollar coming in for license if necessary increase the police he would ortto this end and hand out liberally of his means john grier thought the delegates should go to the convention nn instructed wm probert said he had
