Show A SHORT SESSION OF CONGRESS or course nothing but conjecture can be indulged in in regard to the length of the present session of congress but it is likely to be a short one judging by the way leading congressmen express themselves MR CANNON of illinois is anxious that the session shall be shorter than he first one of any recent congress SPEAKER RESI and MR have both shown their determination in this direction the former by his prompt appointment of the most important committees and the latter by having the ways and means committee over which he presides remain actively at work dur ing the holiday recess in this endeavor the illinoisan can be of the greatest assistance he is the head if the appropriations committee which is the most important of all the house committees except the ways and means tho greater part of the delay in legislation in the past three or four congresses has been due to the negligence or inefficiency of th appropriations committee MR CANNON will see to it that that body be not open to the imputation of these or other shortcomings daring the present congress in truth the extension of the congressional ions in even numbered years to the close or near the close of tho summer mon iha has been entirely inexcusable the breaking of the record in this particular in 1888 when then session lasted until the third week in october was due to partisan maneuvering on the tariff for political effect in tho presidential canvass tho under way there will be no provocation for any such lengthening out of the session this year congressional business is farther advanced now or at least it is in hand better than for a long while past at this date the tariff bill will so promises bo presented to the conae by the beginning and it can bo disposed of in the senate if a reasonable amount of earnestness and intelligence be shown by the close of march while the last of tho appropriation bills can be before the house by the early part of april this will beavo ample time for tho of the other important matters demanding action before tho hottest part of summer sets in when mere existence at the national capital becomes a burden in fact tho long session can generally cene rally be made to end by the close of the fiscal vear on june 30 without neglecting any matter which actually requires consideration by congress inthe party m control of legislation resolutely and intelligently wills it |
