Show IJ IN Tracy lives forever both knew it was a ridiculous suggestion and dismissed it as soon as it was spoken. After about five minutes to halfan hour of healthy brawling Mim and I set aside bitterness ana harsh feelings and decided the civil thing to do would be to hold funeral services for Tracy. We made a casket of a shoe box. We had drawn on it with markers, and had stuck perhaps 287 d stickers all over sparkly, it It was lovely. We laid Tracys limp little body in it. (Her body wasnt limp because she was dead, it was limp because it was always limp. She was, after all, a doll.) Tracys face looked the same as it always looked, with the usual dried milk in the corners of her sweetly smiling mouth, but there was a new look of tranquility and peace on it. It was as though she felt satisfied with her life and was ready to move on. She looked beautiful. She wore a neon green shirt . . . and that's all (we had lost the polka-dskirt that went with the shirt). We had done her hair with, perhaps 17 clips and barrettes, or approximately, one dip per hair. When I laid her in the box, her blue eyes tipped shut for the last time. Mim began the eulogy and soon was weeping pitifully. I, too, felt that tears were necessaiy, but lacked the emotional strength, so I stuck my dirty little finger in my eye and soon I had a nice flow going. Ooooh! I sighed, at various points in Mims speech for dramatic effect All in all it was a most beautiful ceremony. We laid wilted dandelions on top of the box, took a last look at our masterpiece, and then went inside to color. Tracy was alone, out in the harsh elements. Of course, we didnt leave herthere forever. We realized that it was ridiculous to leave a good toy to ruin. Wemay have been young but still we had common sense. So a few weeks later we opened the box, took the old her, (Melissa) and girl out, got a few more good years use out of her. It was later discovered that, if thrown against a hard surface in a vigorous manner, the doll formally known as Tracy could still talk, however, Mim and Eirene thought that the name Melissa was prettier than Tracy, so they decided notto change it The day Tracy died will forever stand as a changing point in my life, s day never to be forgotten, a day never to be remembered without tears of pain. Okay, okay, it was a significant and life changing event for me, though you may have trouble understanding . . the significance and .ness of it all. I shall try my hardest to convey my feelings on the matter. It will, however, be difficult to express myself, to pick at this particularly painfol emotional scab. That summer day started out the same as any other day: wake up at ll:30-iseat cornflakes, (if you're wondering if I skipped the whole Getting dressed bit, dont worry, I didn't skip it That part didnt exist in m schedule back then. I did away with it by merely sleeping in the clothes I intended to wear the next day. True, sometimes that meant wearing the same outfit twice, or you know, thrice in a row, but as was usually the case when I re wore clothing days on end, I didnt care. Ahem. Continuing with my daily schedule . . .) Play house, play Power Rangers, (even though I had never seen Power Rangers, per se, I found it a fun game anyway) play dolls - paper or plastic, eat Raman noodles - dry or cooked, continue to play. It was pretty much the same every day, but on this day, the world was turned upside down. For a very precious and dear doll, Tracy, left this world, my world, and entered the next. My sister, Mim, did the deed. We were playing and Mim pulled Tracys string, expecting to hear, Mommy, look at me! or I love you, Mommy! " or Lets Play! or, (this ones my fkvorite)Ilikesurprises! But Tracy didn't say anything at all. We didnt have any forewarning gurgles or gagging noises; she just didn't talk an; more. Mim gave her a healthy ing and tried again. Nothing. I snatched her away and tried the string myself. No dice. Mim wrestled the doll away from me and gave the string one last vigorous yank. It tore out of Tracys back, flew through the air, and landed on the floor in a pitiful pile. For a moment I stood there in shock and horror, but then overcame all sentiment ant started to pound Mim with my fists. You've killed her! Youve killed her! I shouted savagely in Mim's ear. We can tape it! she screamed back at me while pulling my hair. According to Committee member Beverly Hansen, construction crews are tearing out the sidewalks, curb und gutter, between Wells Fargo Bank und K2 Computers. This is all a part ofthe Main Street Committees continuing effort to make downtown a nicer place to be, said Hansen. Roots of the trees that had been planted along Main Street started raising the concrete on tiie t idewalkB making it hazardous for people to walk on the sidewalks. The trees were torn out, hut not before the damage was done. Along wit h the new sidewal ks, several corners along Main Street will be replaced to make them handicap accessible. This project is the second of Ibursidewalk projects planned by the Muin Street Com mitlee, said Hansen.
