Cross country has traditionally been a major sport at Duchesne High where they have won seven individual state championships with Cody Moat tops at three crowns. Valley was fourth at 113 in the boys class. Dayne and Mitch Grant of Duchesne almost finished in a tie with Dayne placing 10 at 17:24.2 and Mitch 1 1 at 17:24.9. Ryan Moat ended up 18 at 18:09.4. Dayne pocketed 6 last year, and is a senior along with Ryan Moat (11 last season). Mitch is a sophomore. Asher McKee and Jeff Taylor, also, earned points for Duchesne at the state meet Dayne beat his cousin, Mitch by .7" with a wild finish for tenth place at the Btate meet. Taylor and McKee also competed. Altamont successfully defended its region title by winning the girls division. Duchesne was second. Marett wee first and Nicole Bolton, Altamont; Lacol Grant, Duchesne, followed her in the region race. Cross country at Duchesne High is a family affair as the Grants and Moats are related. Brandon, Cody and Ryan Moat are brothers. Mitch is the brother of state champion, Kirk and Dayne 'sbrother is Jarom, who placed second in 1996 to Cody Moat. Lacol and Kbit are twin sisters and their brothers are Dayne and Jarom. All four are related to Brandon, Cody and Ryan Moat Dave Moats sister is the mother ofrunners, Dayne, Jarom, Lacol and Kolt. Mitch and Kirk Grant arent related to the Moats, but are related to the previously mentioned know Grants. Plain and simple-th- ey each other. With three championships, Cody Moat, who is currently doing the running sport for Southern Utah University, is the best ever Duchesne runner and maybe the whole State of Utah. Part of the stoiy about one of his championships ss printed in the Uintah Basin Standard is as follows: "Cody Moat broke his brother's record as the top cross country runner at Duchesne High School with his State Championship third past four years at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City, Wednesday, 1-- A dur-ingt- Oct. 23, 1996 and beat his competition with ease. Codys third crown is the best in the state and at his Duchesne school where he was tied with his brother, Brandon Moat at two each prior to 1996 State Croea Country competition. The Eagles completely dominated individual honors by taking the No. 1 and No. 2 positions as junior Jarom Grant placed second. The Eagles ended up second as a team. C. Moat beat his closest competi- tor-h-is own teammate-Gra- nt by 46 seconds with a time of 15:30 as compared to second place 16:16. Duchesnes Cody Moat led from start to finish, but he had a slower first mile than he wanted according to coach and father Dave Moat at 5:08. He had the lead after the first mile, and he was all alone. He also had a slow second-mil- e with a time of 10:28 (both miles). No one pushed him. The third mile was better. He ran it in almost five flat at 6:02, commented Coach Moat. Coach Moat added, Tm happy to be 1 and 2 at state. Jarom Grant! to Dugway runner, DougHarrisatan earlier race, but beat him this time. Jarom got him at state when it counted. state Cody was also three-tim- e -- champion in wrestling, but his brother Brandon outdid him in the tussling sport by winning four mat crowns. Cody has cross country bragging rights. Brandon won ten state championships in his four yean of high school sports, which included four mat crowns, two cross country titles and four state track championships. However, Kirk Grant is the Duchesne long distance king with four championshipe-a- ll in one season. He won the cross country title in 1999 and was s triple crown winner in the 2000 State Track Meet by nabbing top honon in the 800, 1600 and 3200.
