Show WSC takes fourth by Penny RowLee Staff Reporter It's time for Olympics at least for 34 corporations in Ogden. A team of Weber's faculty and staff participated in the third annual Corporate Olympics last week. The Olympics were sponsored by St. Benedicts Hospital and Gaskill and Foley Insurance Company as a fund raiser. Weber entered the Olympics last year for the first time, and according to Mike Norman, Ed. D. associate professor of corrections and law enforcement, the idea of "fellowship" was foremost on the team's mind. Realizing that the other teams were more competitive, Weber set out to win this year. "We started out like gangbusters," said Norman. "We had the lead in the whole thing with four events left and then we didn't get any more points. We came in fourth," he said. "Teams that traditionally do very well are those that have a lot of employees." DDO took first place, IRS second and Iomega third. The events included a racquetball tournament that was held during the week and a swimming competition on Friday night. The Ogden Athletic Club hosted these events. Later that evening, all the participants were invited to a social. As part of the event, T-shirts designed by the different groups were modeled. They had been pre-judged. Saturday, the day began with an opening ceremony. The flag was presented, the National Anthem sung, and parachutists dropped from the sky. A 5K race kicked off the events with other track and field contests throughout the day. Weber hosted these activities. A key man in coordinating the track events was assistant track coach, Dan Walker. "He volunteers his time to help with the Olympics," said Julie Snowball, Olympics coordinator. Five overall trophies were awarded to winning teams. Cpmpetition was broken down into divisions depending on the corporations number of employees. As well as trophies for winning teams, bronze silver and gold medals were given to individual winners. Weber's men's and women's bike racers won , silver medals, said Norman. The number of participants increase every year. "There were 17 teams the first year," said Snowball. "This year there were 34." General Motors has donated a 1985 Buick Park Avenue to the WSC automotive engineering technology department, which makes the third GM car donated to the college this year. - The car has a retail value of $21,500, and it will be used by both the two-year auto-year autobody and the four-year automotive engineering technology programs."We can't teach current technology without current technology equipment. That's why these types of donations are so vital to our program," said Rondo H. Erickson, associate professor in the college's automotive program. The car is equipped with a V-6, 3.8 liter engine that is run by a computer system. The electronics, braking system and other operations of the car are also run by the computer. Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac Engineering of Flint, Michigan arranged the donation, and the car was presented to the school by local dealer Jim Whet-ton."One of the neat things about this thing is that it shows we have corporate support to help with instruction," said Erickson. NAHB group considered for national award by JaNae Barlow Ass't News Editor The Weber State chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is looking forward to being one of the finalists for Student Chapter of the Year at the national convention in Dallas, Texas next year. Byron Anderson, this year's president of the Weber chapter, said the year has been one of re-building for the group of building-related majors. Previous to this year, the WSC association had 12 members and did not hold any monthly meetings. This year, the group grew to include 32 student members and four faculty advisors. "We worked very hard this year to build our program to one that will enhance our members in the future," said Anderson. Some of the activities NAHB members were involved in this year include leadership conference; the national convention in Dallas, Texas; a professional seminar; an open hour speaker; and an open hour building of a playhouse on campus, which was donated to the College View Preschool. The chapter will also participate in the Weber Basin Home Builders Home Show in August. - In addition to these activities, the group has actively pursued preserving the construction technology program at Weber State. They have done this through letters, lobbying, etc. Anderson feels the group has done a great deal this year to bring recognition not only to themselves but to the building trades program at the college and WSC as a whole. 8 Guaranteed Student Loans! The group has been able to accomplish a lot of its goals this year because of support from ASWSC and ARO, according to Anderson. He said he is grateful for the $2,250 loaned to his group by ASWSC that allowed members to pre-register for the national conference while paying winter quarter registration and enjoying Christmas. He said he also appreciates the $200 check given to the group from ARO for sending students to a national convention and for the $250 of matched funds from ARO for the playhouse construction project. He said the project would not have been possible without these funds.
