Show 16 Signpost Friday, June 6, 1986 Wayment, Henderson make finals Wildcat 3000-meter steeplechasers Mark Wayment and Paul Henderson have advanced to the finals of their speciality at the NCAA track and field championships being held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Wayment and Henderson finished fourth and fifth in their heats on Wednesday to make it into the 12-man final of the steeplechase, which will be held Game teaches teamwork instead (conl. from page 15) After lunch we played a game called Assassin, where everyone divides up into teams of two and tries to shoot each other. My partner was shot in the back, so I moved around a tree for better cover and was promptly nailed in the back, too. All day long, Rose stressed the importance of cooperation. "This game teaches teamwork. Learn to work together; no matter what you do, it is nothing without teamwork," said the Ultimate Game director. This was typified by the winners of Assassin since they were on the same team and were the last remaining players of the game. After Assassin, we had time to play one more game of Steal the Flag we needed to break the tie. This time, I decided to stay in one place and let my enemies come to me. It's odd watching a patch of grass move, then seeing the opposing player walking toward you. I couldn't shoot him, however, for I would have hit him in the head. Shooting anyone in the head disqualifies the shooter from the game. I waited for a better chance to shoot him but another opponent walked by. I pegged him in the leg and ran for shelter, crouching under a tree. But my shirt was stained again by yet another detergent pellet when I was hit in the ribs as I stood up. I was out again, and we lost the tie-breaking contest. The Ultimate Game is a lot of fun and well organized. Rose has had over 900 players in his first two years of operating the game. During this time, Rose has never had a fight or serious injury occur among the FOR SALE Rings and Things. I sell engagement rings, wedding rings, and gold chains. In the steeplechase, only seven of the 12 finalists are Americans; thus, both Wayment and Henderson are assured of making All-American. participants playing the Ultimate Game. "Once I had two guys who couldn't get along, so I put them together and we played Rambo," said Rose. Rambo is a game where two guys get a two-minute head start while the rest of the day's participants try to capture them. "Those two won the game and were the best of friends at the end of the day," Rose said. "See what teamwork does?" The Ultimate Game is played by all kinds of people. Rose has had Scout 'groups as well as a 65-year old man who brought his entire family. Husbands and wives even play the game, usually on different teams a good way to work out daily frustrations. Eighty percent of the players are "first-timers" and only one percent of the players are veterans. The day I played, 1st Lieutenant Bob McCarthy from the Utah National Guard played and had reassuring words for those who think the Ultimate Game is release for war-crazed crackpots. "This is a harmless way to release tension. It discourages 'Ramboism' because it's safe and fun," said Rose. "A lot of people think we are survivalists. We're not survivalists; we want to teach people how to work together and enjoy it." Rose not only manages the Ultimate Game but also trains military personnel and police officers on weekdays, using the theory of the game. Weekends are reserved for civilians only, allowing them to go out and enjoy themselves . . . which is exactly what they do. Sean, I'm glad we can still be friends. I'm here whenever you need to talk. Tupa Staff Reporter What do spectator sports mean to you? What purpose do they serve in a free society? When I was 11 years old, I began watching sports on TV or listening to them on the radio, and they became my first love. In some strange way, they replaced, by proxy, a father I didn't have. My first favorite team was the Minnesota Vikings and it was their great NFL championship year of 1969. I thrilled as they rolled to the title behind the strong shoulders of blood-and-guts quarterback Joe Kapp and the swarming purple-people-eater defense. I then cried bitter tears on that black day in early January 1970 when they were upset by the AFL Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl 23-7. My world was temporarily crushed. I recovered, however, and immersed myself in other sports pro baseball, pro basketball, the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and became interested in smaller sports as well. As my sports understanding and maturity grew, I also developed in other aspects of life. I learned about disappointment from the Vikings' defeat and hundreds of other losses. I learned about consistency from watching Roberto Clemente and the 1972 world champion Pittsburgh Pirates. I learned about effort and dogged determination from standing on the sidelines and watching my high school team, the Kearns High Cougars, win the Utah State football championship. Without these sports in my life past, and also present and future, great lessons would be lost and everyday life would be boring. The importance of sports in America and a free society is vital, because it allows men and women to strive for the heights of perfection, not for government's sake, but for the sake of human excellence.
