Show LOYAL TROOPS DEFEND MADRID OLIAS, Sept. 29 (U.PJ The loyalists abandoned Toledo at 8 a. m. today, finally surrendering surren-dering complete control to the advancing rebel troops. BY LOUIS F. KEEMLE United Press Cable Editor The Madrid government forces routed from Toledo, formed their lines a few miles east of there today to-day for a desperate attempt to turn back the insurgents from Madrid. It was an apparent last stand and the rebels have every chance of driving the loyalists back and marching into Madrid on the one side, while cutting the capital's rail communitions to the coast on the other. The loss of Toledo is a severe blow to the loyalists. It was their main source of munitions. The jubilant rebels were in no hurry, carefully consolidating their lines. , In the action along the Madrid highway yesterday and today, the ! rebels made no appreciable advance, ad-vance, but did stand against a furious loyalist counter-attack. Madrid was plainly apprehensive. apprehens-ive. Government communiques made the most of such military successes as could be claimed but the people were uneasy. |
