Show .. nor should he endeavor to prevent others to partake in whatever views the locale has to offer. The population has stabilized here, after an explosive growth for 5 yean that topped . 'S?5M 3 one yeari Secondly, it is sheer fallacy to think that the mere hue of the mountains, the pristine environment; the lack of crime and pollution, and the absence of neighbors promulgate happiness. I left a big city, Houston, TX, five years ago for Utah in the hope to find Utopia. -It is not here, thanks to the appalling lack erf amenities that promote namely, the arts, symphonic concerts, opera, ballet, the dubs where one can dance, meet people, play bridge, the city lights providing a romantic stroll, and work and money. Although I am retired, I can see around me that the lack of decent paying jobs is on many people's minds. There is absolutely nothing here that can elevate my souL The mountains are still here, but after a few yean their appeal tends to get subdual in one's mind. Here, as is no doubt the case in Grand Junction, GO, it is nothing but jeans and sneakers. The most intellectual talk centers on the quality of the air. It is pure, although, rt somewhat tainted by recent wild fires. et al are the only links to civilized life, sometimes hectic, however. So, I cannot wait to get back to the big dty. Finally, the lady is wrong about England. It has 50 million people, not 33 million. As the United Kingdom, it passed the 58 million mark and is close to 100,000 square miles in area or about 23 the size of California. I know Europe well, for I was bran and raised there. It is true that many farmlands are not Infringed upon in England or on the continent, for that matter. But this is due to the fact that Europeans are much more than Americans. They tend, for the most part; to live in tight quarters. 13 acre estates are rare there. Some estates are larger, granted, but consider Paris, France, a dty of more than 9 million people living on 432 square miles. Some neighborhoods are, shall I say, encumbered. Yet, the enormous parks and boulevards are still there. Once outside the dty limits, die road opens up, and one can bask in unlimited scenery. That is what I call the best erf two worlds. I must also emphasize that pride shows along those European roads. There is nothing tacky about them, although they, too, are pretty well populated. All one has to do is compare the size of Europe with that of America - close to 700 million people against almost 260 million here; for a comparable land area. There is so much fun there, so many unhappy people here. Draw your own conclusions. 14 Dear Jim: Charlie Peterson has shown his true colors in his latest article in the Zephyr. Obviously he's a true-blliberal democrat How can we believe the things he says when he echoes the extravagant claims of Clinton who says that he has cut the national deficit, crime, waste, etc, etc. Even some democratic lawmakers say Clinton is a good liar. Peterson blames the national debt on Reagan and Bush. Actually it's 40 years of Democratic congressional control that has brought this country close to fiscal and moral bankruptcy. ue Sincerely, Keith Walker Moab well-bein- g Wal-Ma- Dear Jim: in your last So glad to read Phillip Hyde's sensitive and visionary so than Elliot issue. He has always been a very favorite photographer of mine-mo- re Prater, whose miniaturist technique, even in color, did not capture the spirit of Glen Canyon like Phillip's eloquent black and whites. he produced a folio of such photos with a text by my Way back in die never-nevefriend Bruce Beigpr-actuait was Bruce's journal of his first and only, and my last trip down the Glen in the fall of by Northland Press of Flagstaff, AZ. It did not get a token of the recognition or distribution that it deserved. Having known, and said, way back in the '50's that there were already too many of ns, as Phillip also knew, I'm even more certain now that we're headed for just what we deserve, even if there are some who don't deserve it Our planet cannot tolerate our bulk or our philosophy much longer, and Mother Earth has many ways of ridding herself of the itch. We saw one of them in the Glen when it was still alive. I'm on my way to the shop to get a bumper sticker printed. They never help, but I do it anyway. It'll piss off the stupid and get a nod from those already aware and practicing. h r, lly 1962-publis- hed USE A CONDOM SPARE US A CONDO Sincerely, R. Vergught Santa Clara, UT Keep the faith, Stiles. Ever your supporter, Katie Lee Dear Editor I live in Santa Clara, next to Saint George, UT, for away from the controversy generated by newcomers to your area and general land use but, since my region experienced a similar turmoil a couple of years ago, I feel inclined to respond to some discrepancies by Anne Landman of Glade Park, GO (Zephyr, Volume 8, Number 3) First of all, her mathematical "reality of 2.7 population growth would double its numbers in 27 years, not 26. Then she forgets to take into consideration that an initial surge of 2.7 growth does not necessarily mean a similar growth for 27 more years! It could happen between now and the year 2000, then would probably taper off, It has happened in Saint George. People were up in arms here until last year, when elections were held about the issue of sustained versus controlled growth at 3 per annum. Those for control lost two thirds to one, for good reasons. No one can control or stop progress A M C ve Dear Zephyr, I diink that all of the big wigs in the Forest Service should be made to leave their computers and their cost analysis sheets fra a week and go out and sit alone by a bubbling mountain stream and get dear on what they are doing! with the beauty of the natural world and our place Perhaps then they will within it And if they are very fortunate they may even understand the lyrics erf the song..ihe hills are alhx with the sounds of music. Bongs they have sung for a million years. Dead stumps don't sing - denuded slopes are a sad place like battle grounds where the earth has been raped - no one goes to sit there anymore. There are other things to build our houses with other than live trees dike the earth itself!) and other jobs we can create that don't destroy the ecosystem of the biosphere! Equally there are other things we can eat that are for better fra our health and for the planet than the meat of another species (cattle) that we've enslaved for its flesh.
