When the prop hit the sandy bottom of the side canyon I made everyone get out and start hiking upstream. We twisted round and round the bends and the stragglers started to complain and then to drop out and head bade to the boat, the beer, the waterskls. I was the only one left when I rounded the last bend, the walls on both skies closed overhead, and I stood at the edge of a plunge pool inside the Cathedral, the little stream falling into the pool from way overhead. The pool surrounded by vertical walls covered with wikiflowers, ferns, and mosses. I ran back down the canyon and convinced at least part of our group to hike back up and look. It was incredibly beautiful-i- ts only foiling was that you couldn't boat right up to it The next year I did the same thing with another group of friends. Except that we didn't have to walk as far. Again, I thought this must be progress, it least my friends didn't complain as much. Two years later I went bade for a third time I couldn't remember having to boat up the side canyon quite so far; in fact, we boated around the last bend and right into the middle of that dammed grotto. Other boaters were already there, echoing their boats' horns off the Cathedral's walls. The plunge pool was gone, fait most of the Cathedral was still visible. Everybody else loved it felt weird; I missed the walk and the solitude The last time I went up that side canyon I tied my boat above the Cathedral at the point where the stream had earlier fallen into the plunge pool. That year I at least got to walk some more...right on up that little stream, above the flooded Cathedral in die Desert I don't know how to explain the changes that came over me during those years. Maybe the kid with the Jeep drowned along with the Cathedral, I don't know. I certainly had read more: John McPhee's Encounters with the Archdruid, Abbey's Desert Solitaire, the classic The Place No One Knew. I had come to trust less the federal government and its leaders and bureaucracy and to trust my own feelings more. Also, I had two kids of my own by then and I realized that the world was changing, not necessarily for the better, and that they would never get to hike up to the Cathedral in the Desert Never. So I turned a comer. I hate Lake PowelL I hate powerboating. I hate In general and in particular. If you want to torture me, strap me to a snowmobile or a slddoo or a waverunner or a jetsld and take me for a ride.
