Show One Thing Needful I THE HERALD has never opposed sewerage sewer-age in this city There would be no need to say this If it were not for the falsehood of a contemporary Nobody connected with THE HERALD has opposed sewerage Thispaper has always been opposed to dnniping the filth of the city into the Jordan river and it has not changed its views on the subject What THE HERAID predicted when the plan of sewer discharge i I charge now condemned was mooted has come to pass Its inconsiderate neighbor was then as now beside itself with rancor whenever its crude notions were questioned The expensive gravity system now contemplated con-templated has at least the merit of efficiency The plan adopted is not of sufficient utility to dispose of the sewage from the small district now supplied with pipes That demonstrates its incapacity for the needs of this huge and growing city THE HERALD was right in its attitude atti-tude on that question at the first and the attempt to misrepresent it only comes j back on the head of its maligner We trust there will be no more mistakes of this kind What is done now must be commenced with a view to the expected needs of the entire city in this respect the gravity system recommends itself to the consideration of the citizens I We suppose what we are about to say on this matter will be viewed as a capital cap-ital crime by our captious neighbor We believe the sewerage question is of more importance than the boulevard We think the public funds will be put to better bet-ter use inextending sewerage and rendering render-ing what we have more effective than in making one thoroughfare for the benefit I I of some real estate dealers and a few other folks and keeping it in order for pleasure I I seekers We share the views of the majority ma-jority of the people of this city on this subject I We are not afflicted with boulevard on I the brain so we have regard for other and more important matters We would be pleased to see fine streets splendid drives and every needed improvement here We want them badly but wo need sewerage more The city authorities are responsible to the taxpayers for their expenditure ex-penditure of public funds and we voice the public demand when we say give us first the things that are needed most Utility and necessity before surplusage i and adornment |
