Show 10 Jon. 18, Hilltop Times COMMENTS Wl Patton must be smiling about Desert Shield From the start, President Bush has outlined the mission of the move to the Middle East. People can argue it, dispute it or fall in line with it. Why? Because they can understand it. As recently as Nov. 26, in a bylined article in by MSgt. Charlie Dowden Kelly AFB, Texas t's nice having a job with dearly defined goals. It makes everything fall into place with the result a tidy package that folks can understand, talk about and the president same those four goals repeated that first became identified with Operation Desert Shield. "Our goals have not changed since I first outlined them to the American people last August," the president wrote. "First, the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Second, the restoration of Kuwait's legitimate government. Third, security and stability for the Gulf-- an important national interest of the United States since the time of Harry Truman. And fourth, the protection of American citizens abroad." In one relatively short paragraph, the president explained why the United States has spearheaded this action in the Persian Gulf. Four simple sentences give relevance to the adage: Actions speak louder than words. For a great majority of the coun- try, the tidy package is Operation Desert Shield. When the president dropped the green flag, the Air Force and its sister services sprang from the starting blocks. It was the ultimate rapid deployment force. Gen. George Patton, who rampaged across the fields of Europe 50 years ago, probably would smile broadly at this quick, decisive action, especially so close on the heels of Operation Just Cause last December. The famed general's often-use- d "We're not here to die for our country" quote would play auwell with today's fired-u- p dience. The general would have liked d the goals, although he would have phrased probably them a little differently. For those whose only knowledge of him is the movie bearing his name, even that scant picture offers us a view of a combat leader who liked things simple and to the point. That seems to be the case today. well-define- M e mm mm lilt .Mmitk mm f fwm ' VJKiL mm Gift (1 G3 fijffi Sergeant Bowden writes for the Air Force News Center at Kelly.
