Because local funds were extremely tight practically nonavailable Mr. Pinnau took on the project of personally installing all of the equipment, including hardware, software, LAN and wiring. He debuted the programs and system and began training workers to use the new drafting system. "Adding the LAN will improve the quality of our work and the speed that we can produce work," he said. There are other benefits as well, he said. Work processing files can be accessed at any personal computer tied to the network, which reduces the time an engineer or technician has to wait to access a program or document. Documents can be saved to a shared drive, reducing the need to print hard copies for distribution within the office area. It also allows the secretary to check the format of the document before it is printed. And the LAN system also allows sharing of many popular software programs, Mr. Pinnau said. These programs are shared by using metering software that allows only the legal number of copies the organization owns to be checked out. "We're still on the learning curve," said Dick Healy, engineering team coordinator. "People are still learning how to use it, but it's going to be engineering planning team in the and Industrial Support Directorate 99 doing better work than ever, and doing it more efficiently, thanks to a new computer-aidedrafting system, officials said. "This new system is already showing real benefits by greatly improving the productivity and quality of engineering drawing and graphics products," said Mark Pinnau, an engineer in the directorate's plant operations division. New software purchased with the system speeds editing and revision of drawings. It also allows drawings to be scaled to any size without having to reproduce the drawing. As more drawings, both old and new, are added to the system, the engineering team's productivity will keep getting better. The system will provide greater accuracy of drawings and will produce higher quality drawings, he said. As well as helping engineers and technicians to do superior work, the new drafting system is a . The system was acquired through money-savera Department of Defense program called the Fast Payback on Capital Investment Program, -- Dick d Engineering Healy team coordinator which provides for productivity enhancing capital investments in equipment and facilities. According to Mr. Pinnau, the project involved a capital investment of $102,317, which included the computer hardware, software programs, a large size drawing plotter and the associated Local Area Network components to link together three workstations, several printers and remote computer terminal workstations. The project e showed a savings of $30,053, an annual of $90,276 and provided an amortization savings period of 16.5 months well under the qualifying limit of 24 months. The FASCAP program requires that the installation costs be financed from local Operations and Maintenance funds.
