Show University initiates Legislative Relations program The University will initiate a new program this year to acquaint students with the views of local and state candidates for state legislature. The Office of Legislative Relations will be the new name for last year's Committee on Legislative and Community Relations. Headed by Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) President Steve Gunn and executive secretary Stan. Smith, College of Law student, the group will primarily familiarize students on the problem of state finances in higher education. The committee hopes to gain strength and eventually discuss marijuana laws and lowering the voting age to 18. Campaigns For Funds Apart from last year's committee, where a speech or two was given in the community, this year the group will campaign for funds to colleges around Utah. They will organize on most major college campuses and issue students and their parents pamphlets on "Students Case For Higher Education." Students and parents will be urged to know their local candidates' views and actively campaign for them. President Steve Gunn said, "Whatever the state Legislature decide ( on University funds, it will effect every student's pocketbookasv; i as his education." He said if students want to try to change legislate! views, they have to show "political muscle" and get behind candidates of their choice. I Candidates To Speak The relations committee will have several legislative candidates:: campus to speak to interested students and faculty members. Other members besides Smith and Gunn are Ralph Mabey, D?vi: Irvine, Judy Finlfnson, and Randy Dryer. Working on the faculty level is Wallace Bennett, associate dean e: the College of Law. On the state level and. heading most ci tk campaign is Neal Maxwell, executive vice president of the Univcnit; who has been labeled by Gov. Calvin L. Rampton as "the best lotfe. in the state." The campaign will start-off with a meeting at Fort Douglas wili members from other Utah colleges, Mr. Maxwell, and Universit; President James C. Fletcher. |
