It's unnerving to have communication going on all around, and not being able to understand a sound. If you're deaf or hard of hearing, that's part of the problem right there: sound. This disability can effectively isolate a person from the rest of the world. But it doesn't have to. On Thursday March 16, 2006, as part of UVSC's Disability Awareness Week, Shawnelle Hardman, current Miss Deaf Utah, presented at UVSC. Her presentation focused on her experiences growing up deaf and those of her friends. She emphasized that being deaf hadn't hindered her at all. What was important for anybody, according to Hardman, was to decide who you are, make goals, and stick with them. "We're the ones that people depend on for the future. The more we think about the positive, the better people we will become." Hardman even said that being deaf had its advantages. She said she wasn't distracted by noise like others may be. When asked if she'd ever considered cochlear implants, she said no, that she is happy the way she is. At this event, an award was presented to Dr. Katherine French, a professor of developmental psychology at UVSC, for her work for the benefit of disabled students. In an online survey, 47 UVSC students said they used some form of aid,, for the hearing impaired, more than many schools of higher education in the west, including BYU.
