While the story was lame and full of holes, the power generated by its disturbingcontent was strong and to the point. The end product was flawed because of the story, not its young newcomer director - Alexandre Aja. Aja's latest project, the Wes Craven remake of The Hills Have Eyes, can now be seen in theaters. » The Hills Hove Eyes follows the story of a traveling family that gets stranded in the New Mexico desert after a nasty accident. Little do they know that the accident was caused by a family of morbid cannibals altered by nuclear fallout from government testing. After killing a few of the family members, the mutants kidnap their infant child causing the surviving family members to step up and go after them. I've said it before, and this time I really mean it. This movie is very graphic and disgusting. The Hills Have Eyes was originally given the NC-17 rating. Only after easing the content did it receive the R rating j and it's still disgusting. We're talking the same disgusting as Hostel. One scene that involves burning alive, execution, and rape causes many people to walk out - even in SLC theaters! All-in-all, if you like gross horror movies, this one ought to do it for you. Aja has a great way of making you feel utterly grossed out to the point where you squirm. I look forward to seeing what else this young filmmaker can do as he grows in experience, because he creates an unforgettable uneasiness that other horror filmmakers only wish they could mimic. After suffering the criticism of the Matrix sequels, the Wachowski went into hiding. What did they do while away? They wrote the brilliant adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel Vfor Vendetta. If you remember the trailer from last summer, its catch phrase was, "Remember, remember the 5th of November." Vs original release date was to be November 4th of last year, but was pushed to the present after post-production took longer than expected. After the disappointing wait, the final product was well worth it. The premise to V is extremely simple: A heroic masked terrorist known as "V" is trying to cause a revolution in the futuristic Nazi Germany-like Great Britain. While beginning his yearlong mission, fate places Evey (Natalie Portman) in his path, who ends up getting tangled into the whole mess with him. Vfor Vendetta is already causing some buzz with people claiming it encourages going against the system. The English are pissed because the character "V" idolizes Guy Fawkes - a man who attempted to blow up parliament on November 5, 1605. The mask the V wears is the face of Guy Fawkes. The quality of Vfor Vendetta is down-right amazing. What else would you expect from the brothers that brought us The Matrix? The "bullet-time" special effect has been outdated, so they created another new sharp-looking effect that does to knives what The Matrix did to bullets. "Knife-time?" Maybe. I don't know. But not only did they give us the visually best action sequences since The Matrix, but they cast the best people for the parts. Until Garden State, I didn't think much of Natalie Portman's acting. Since then, she's taken off! Her portrayal of Evey will cause every guy to fall in love with her again. Not only is she breathtaking, but there are scenes of such emotional breakdown that will convince you that she's not acting. Playing the masked hero "V" is Hugo Weaving (The Matrix's Mr. Smith). And if you're one of these people who have seen the trailers and say, "I can't watch that silly mask for two hours," get over it. After five minutes it seems natural as you get a feel for his character. Considering his acting is mostly through body language and voice inflection, he did an amazing job with such a limitations. Not many actors could have pulled that off. Listen to me, there is no reason, why anyone should miss this movie. Just like the Matrix Trilogy, there isn't much offensive content. Three Fbombs. Some violence (nothing too bad). And concentration camp-like mistreatment and genocide of minorities. If anything, this movie gives you hope. You'll leave wanting to participate in some type of upheaval. I know I do. |
