Show Frosh- Varsity Tilt Set for Tonight Basketball holds the spotlight tonight as the University will dawn the 1964 cage squad in the annual freshman-varsity classic. The game will begin at 8:00 in the Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse with a thirty minute intra-squad game following immediately. George Fisher, a 6'6 forward on last year's freshman team will start in the post tonight for the varsity. Veterans Doug Moon and Skip Kroeger will be Coach Jack Gardner's Gard-ner's starting guards while Spence Thurgood and junior transfer Dennis Den-nis Couch get the call at forward. COACH JERRY PIMM reports 6'8 Bill Ivey of Ogden's Weber High will open tonight's contest at center. cen-ter. Sixteen year old Jeff Ockel at 6'7 will start at forward along with 6'4 Ken Belka of Salt Lake's Granite High. Two more local boys will get the starting call tonight at guard. Dave Giles of East High and Dale Aste of South both stand 5'11 and will open tonight's game on the guard line. The varsity opens it's regular season Saturday in the Ute field-house field-house against Fresno State. NEWCOMERS in line for center tomorrow night are junior transfer trans-fer Charles Currington at 6'6 and 6'6 George Fisher, one of four sophs up from the frosh team. Currington Cur-rington was not much of a scorer at San Francisco J.C. but was strong on the boards. Fisher tallied close to 20 ppg for the frosh, and led the Papooses in rebounds. Freshman star center Bob Pence needs some experience, but" he should turn into a fine ball player. The frosh side of tomorrow's game is no different. Coach Jerry Pimm's Papooses have nothing but high school glory and the past few weeks of practice prac-tice with which to meet the varsity. var-sity. Ironically the freshmen will be taller than the varsity under the boards. Six-eight Bill Ivey of Ogden's Og-den's Weber High got the starting call tomorrow at post. Sixteen year old Jeff Ockel of San Diego, Cal., will be on the line with Ivey. Both boys are big at 219 and 216 pounds and should give the smaller Ute Varsity board trouble. The other forward slot is with Ken Belka, 6'4 of Granite. Starting at guard is Dale Aste. Dale Aste tied for the scoring leadership lead-ership in the Salt Lake City region with 18.6 ppg for the South High Cubs. Aste stands 5'11. Another 5'11 guard is former East High star Dave Giles who has an excellent outside shot. Joined by 6'1 Bill Borneman of Oak Brook, 111., Giles is a big threat at the guard position. One can be sure that free substitution sub-stitution will rule the clash regardless re-gardless of who starts as both frosh and varsity dig for winning combinations this year. Utah's tough competition this year includes NCAA runner up Cincinnati, Cin-cinnati, now ranked third in the country, and Arizona State, currently cur-rently number six on Associated Press polls. Tickets are on sale at the Ute ticket office in the Einar Nielson Fieldhouse and at the Mint Cafe downtown. Utah, facing a tough basketball season, will display a lot of new faces as only six of the fifteen man squad are returnees from last year's varsity. DOUG MOON, a 6'1 senior guard will get an opening berth at guard. Moon was third in scoring last season with 11.0 ppg, first in free throw shooting with 85, second in rebounds with 146, second in field goal percentage with .454 and first in personal fouls with 72. (Oops!) The other guard spot had been open for speculation, with Skip Kroeger and Spence Thurgood probably getting first grabs. Kroeger, Kroeg-er, a 5'11 junior, and Thurgood, a 6'2 senior, both saw considerable action at guard last year. Thurgood was moved to forward, giving Kroeger the inside track. Thurgood picked off four rebounds a game last year and has the size and strength to play the forward wall. Kroeger, with lots of speed and fine defensive ability, played in every Ute game last year. Utah has an abundance of average av-erage height on the front wall, and take your pick for the regulars. reg-ulars. Danny Hawes, a 6'5 senior forward will probably see action tonight. He averaged 8.3 ppg last year and brought down 103 rebounds. re-bounds. John Oblizalo, a 6'6 center from Missoula, Mont., will be in reserve at the post position. Oblizalo has seen little action in his Redskin career playing only five games last year. His size (213 pounds) could make him a tough competitor this year. I |
