Show freedom train dedicates rededicates re american ideals the year of re dedication rededication to A merican principles was ushered in september 1st by proclamation of president truman every community in the country is being urged to conduct a re dedication week with appropriate celebrations and programs and the government will transport to many of the large cities through the cooperation of the railroads in a specially equipped freedom tram train some original american historical documents which played an important part in the develop ment of american democracy the freedom train will start in the east for its early appear ances and accompanying celebia eions the origin of this american her ilage program is to foster a better understanding of our american ec gnomic system in keeping with the council councils s peace time operation the request for this campaign coming from a private source was referred to the public advisory committee for ap after a full dress discus son s on by this committee the pro dosal was passed to a sub con cittee composed of dr george N president of hunter col lege paul G hoffman president of studebaker and boris econom iest of the A F L for fur ther study this group represent ing major segments of american life prepared the final document upon re submission of this broad ened plan to the full committee the campaign was approved and passed to the council for action the campaign was developed a round ten points which are the basic goals of the american eco system they are first freedom of the individual to work in the callings and localities of his choice second freedom of the individual to contract about his af fairs third freedom of the in owner of private property to start and manage an enterprise to invent and profit thereby to invest in a profit and loss system to buy and to sell in a free mark et in so far as this freedom does not conflict with the public in terest fourth freedom to speak to inquire and lind to discuss fifth protection for the by public or private means against the basic hazards of existence over which he may have no control sixth government action in economic affairs when necessary to ensure national security or to un dermake socially desirable projects when private interests prove in adequate to conduct them seven freest possible competition con sistena with the public welfare we are opposed to uncontrollable able mon of any kind eight free collective bargaining the right to labor to organize and to bargain collectively with employers nine expanding productivity as a na dional necessity american exper cence has proved that it is in the long run the interest of all a to pay labor progressively higher wages in relation to prices b to do this by progressively ing productivity per man hour through the application of con scantly greater mechanization power efficiency and skill in the process of production and di tion and c to reduce hours of labor and improve real income while increasing the volume of production and distribution ten increased recognition of human values as a pre requisite to better living as a technological society develops it inevitably produces a varying amount of indu industrial al dis placement and unemployment while no solution of the problem has been found the american peo pie have sought to deal with it not through a compulsory assign ment of laid off workers to other tasks but through such devices as unemployment insurance em services vocational re training public work community employment projects and family welfare programs but much re mains to be done this is one of the most dynamic educational projects in america today I 1 know you all have a deep interest in the freedom train and the american heritage pro gram the freedom train will be a traveling shrine of american ism carrying a collection of the original documents such as the constitution and the declaration of independence which evidence our liberties |
