Show SOLDIER COMMIT8 SUICIDE AT FORT DOUGLAS Salt Lake City, June 21. Private William Hawke, 28 years old, ot company com-pany I, twentieth Infantry, nt Fort Douglas, committed suicide at noon yesterday by shooting. He wns preparing pre-paring to go on guard duty and was In the squad room. He was seen to place a cartridge In the breech ot his gun, but ob this is not an uncommon occurrence, no ono attached any significance sig-nificance to It. Without speaking, be lay down on the bed and placing the muzzle to his head, pulled the trigger. The top of his head was tron off una he died Instantly. It Is thought that ho hnd 'been discouraged dis-couraged on account of troublo that ho had had at tho fort. Ho bad been away from tho barracks for four days . thcut official leave of absence and uien he returned hnd been tried In tho summary court. Ills sentence hui. not been fixed. He had told some ot his fellow soldiers that he would not be a soldier much longer. Hawke made but few friends and they aro Ignorant as to his reason for tho act. His mother lives In New York. Word ot the death ot her son has been telegraphed tele-graphed to her nnd the body Is in the hospital morgue pending Instructions. Unless other arrangements are made, the body will be buried in the post cemetery. e BRYAN APPEALS TO DEMOCRATS TO HELP HIM Chicago, June 21. Branding Judge Alton B. Parker as a "reactionary," William Jennings Brynn today telegraphed tele-graphed to a number ot prominent Democrats throughout tho country, appealing ap-pealing to them to Join him In preventing pre-venting the election ot Judge Parker as temporary chairman of tho Baltimore Balti-more convention. The telegram was addressed to Speaker Clark, Governor Govern-or Wilson of New Jersey, Governor Burke of North Dakota, Governor Foss of Massachusetts, Govornor Baldwin ot Connecticut, and Mayor Gaynor of New York City. Colonel Bryan's appeal follows: "In the Interest of harmony I suggested sug-gested to the sub-committee ot tho Democratic national commlttco tho advisability ad-visability of recommending as temporary tempo-rary chairman some progressive acceptable ac-ceptable to the leading progressive candidates for the presidential nomination. nom-ination.
