Hansen wns fatally shot bo-cause, bo-cause, In the performance of his duty, he tried to thwart tho desperadoes In their attempt at blackmail. Ilert Dalton Is In Jail here tonight, held on the charge of being ono ot the perpetrators of tho attack on Hansen. Han-sen. Dalton confessed that ho was an associate of tho Whltneys nnd that ho held their horses while they attacked the marshal. The Jail where Dalton la confined Is being guarded to prevent pre-vent the release of the prisoner by the Whltneys. Attempt At Blackmail. Wednesday night Peter Olson, banker, bank-er, found pasted upon his gatepost, a paper which demanded $1500. Failure Fail-ure to comply with tho demand, the paper stated, would result in the swift death of Olson and his entire family. The paper was signed "Hugh and Charley Whitney." It was specified in the notice that the money was to bo deposited on Thursday night at a spot near the Bearr Ivor bridge southwest of town, designated by a red lantern. Olson notified Marshal Hansen and turned over to him tho notlco Of blackmail. Hansen obtained a horso from tho shearln- m nd started for tho place Indicated In tho Bandits' Bote. Ho Is survived by n widow nnd baby at Cokevllle, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hansen of Tooele, and by two brothers, F. E. Hnnsen of Salt Lake City nnd Edwin Hansen, who lives In Wyoming.
