Show rm STEGGER'S J, CORNER u By Dan Steggell student affairs, the Senate chamber looks just like another black tie affair (with no lace). Women are relegated to function as secretaries or cooks. Down west (of the border), sexist discrimination is openly and blatantly practiced. Of course, according to the Student Code of Conduct: "...a purely social or fraternal organization may limit membership to one sex..." (Which makes it all right, I guess.) And heading south (or east or west or north), the "Saints" depict to us the real role of woman. Man receives the priesthood. Man makes up the council of twelve. His wife stays home with the kids. Mike in an "All in the Family" episode was right when he reminded Gloria the "Declaration of Independence" only mentions men, not women. But why such a lack of identity should exist today is something to ponder in a time of "equality and civil rights." As poet Dale S. Hadley summarized sum-marized so well: "Woman was created from the rib of man, not from his head to be above him nor his feet to be walked upon, but from his side to be equal..." It was the Christmas season. It was a time of peace, of equality. It was a time when most people forget their prejudices and open up their narrow little minds. It was just a couple of weeks ago (come to think of it). And the sign read: "Peace on earth, good will toward men." "Hark (the herald angels sang)," I emphasized. "But why not have good will toward women?" Obviously, someone must have fqrgot (to be sure). The man said: "Women should stay at home and take care of the children and the dishes." And more often than not, one finds the "weaker sex" on campus accepting such a philosophy willingly. Their future goals remain as maintaining a home, shopping, greeting "hubby" when he returns, having kids pull on their apron strings and waiting for high school reunions. Mailer summed up in his Prisoner of Sex: "The fact of the matter is that the prime responsibility of a woman probably is to be on earth long enough to find the best mate possible for herself and conceive children who will improve the species." Woman is relegated to function as a tool or object of use. Such is the sexist standard of the University. A simple glance at a University Senate meeting is one indication that women as "higher-ups" are lacking. With the exception of of Virginia Frobes, vice-president of |
