"One opon-al- r room In aver; new school building, Is the policy which the board of education of Pawtucket, R. I., officially adopted, at Its meeting on July IS, aays the Survey Magazine. This slogan was framed by Prank O. Draper, the auperlntendent of schools. The committee on school property approved of the recommendation and the architect who Is preparing plans for a new school building was instructed to Incorporate lu his room even bedrawings an open-ai- r fore the whole board bad taken final action on the proposal. Pawtucket school in opened its first fresh-al- r May, and la therefore quite a recent addition to the ranks of the cities that can boast of this new feature of an school system. But this bustling city In northern Rhode Island has taken a most advanced If not aa yet unique position In deciding to make special provision in every school for children with a predisposition to tuberculosis. Pawtucket also Illustrates how quickly public sentiment can he created in favor of providing fresh air for children In the schools. Two years ago an effort was made to convert a small schoolbouse into an open-ai- r school. Surrounding property owners who didnt care to have a lot of sick children in their backyards," killed the plan temporarily. A year ago a tuberculosis exhibit was held In the city, and as an Indirect result Pawtucket now has one of the heat open-ai- r schools in the country. Every bone and portion is marked and catalogued In order, and within the London next few days a surgeon Is to undertake the delicate operation of piecing the figure together. This prehistoric man was one of the discoveries made by ths little band of explorers who have just returned from Egypt after five months tour on behalf of the fund. According to experts, the discovery dates from a period earlier than 6000 or 7000 B.-The explorers and native workmen were digging at Abydoa, Upper Egypt, about nine miles from the Nile, when they found an oval crouch grave In the sand. It was a figure on Its left side, doubled up, with the knees to the chla. It proved to be the skeleton of a man In a fine Is state of preservation. Abydos really a huge cemetery. Experts aver It has been used as a burying place for all time. The surface Is now of sand. When this Is scraped away the blackened bricks of the Romans are revealed; underneath lie the burials of the eighteenth dynasty, 1600 or 2000 years B. C., and further is down are the burl'., places of the prein historic period. At the present day the Arabs use the spot as a cemetery. The friends of Miss Shepherd and of her father, gathered at the house at 9 a. m. and went to Bliss Hall, where Mr. Shepherd had worshiped so The Tabernacle many years. was very kindly offered for the services, but it was felt that Mr. Shepherd's choice was at his old church home. Mr. Whalley rose to the full height of the occasion and showed from Pauls masterpiece on death and the resurrec tioninthe 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians, the glory of a spiritual life, here in the body. Miss Cornelia Arbuckle gave a beautiful rendering of the hymn, T Know that my Redeemer Lives, which was received, as well as the sermon, with rapt attention. Six high school boys, Kimball and Israel Barlow, William Buckland, Scott Ledingham, Harold Palmer and Frank Muir, were the pall bearers, and Miss Shep-herp- s pupils and the teachers of the high school furnished beauti ful flowers for the casket. This was all so appropriate be cause Mr. Shepherd who had a fine voice and was a good singer, was such a lover of flowers and song. The house was filled with friends who wished to express their sympathy for the two daughters who are left to mourn. James Smedley, Fabyan Sessions, .David Fenwick, and Mr. Buckland furnished carriages to take the remains to Mount Olivet cemetery, 14 miles from Bounti ful, where Dr. Paden, with Gra hams quartette, conducted the exercises at the grave. A full day was occupied with the funeral services. lnd. phone 4&i; Bell ? Ecdcs Building. Ogden, Utah 402-40- 3 i. ness: The bond of Jens K. Nelsdr, county treasurer, was approved.
