O t t o w i l l a l s o b e visiting Utah schools and participating in multiple SLOC youth programs. The river otter is found locall y a l o n g t h e b a n k s o f U t a h ’s Green and Colorado Rivers. Once indigenous to the area, over trapping and pollution wiped out the otter population in t h e e a r l y 1 9 0 0 ’s . I n 1 9 9 0 , t h e river otter was successfully reintroduced and today is regularly spotted near Flaming G o rg e . The International paralympic Committee approved Otto in April 1999. Mascots from previous Paralympic Games include Lizzie the lizard (Sydney 2000), the Parabbit (Nagano 1998), Blaze the phoenix (Atlanta 1996), Sondre the troll (Lillehammer 1994), and Petra the young girl (Barcelona 1992). The Paralympic Wi n t e r Games are an elite-level compet i t i o n f o r t h e w o r l d ’s t o p a t h letes with disabilities. Disabilities include amputees, c e r e b r a l p a l s y, v i s i o n i m p a i r e d and wheelchair athletes. Competition is held in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, short track racing and ice sledge h o c k e y. T h e P a r a l y m p i c Wi n t e r Games will be held March 7 – 16, 2002 with an expected 1,100 athletes and coaches from 40 countries.
