So why are they? After all my experiences here at CEU I am almost positive that there is no reason to purchase a meal plan whatsoever but apparently the administration doesn't see it that way In fact they fully endorse student purchases of meal plans Did I say endorse? I'm sony I meant to say they force you to purchase a meal plan If you dorm you are required to pay for a meal plan This arc a resident of a administration docs not allow you to live in the dorms if you don't have a meal plan because they feel that there are irresponsible people who can't budget their money effectively so by requiring them to put all of their food money into the school up front they can guarantee that students receive a meal Basically the administration wants to play the role of the parent in that it wants to make sure little Johnny eats a square meal everyday To me that's ludicrous for several reasons The most obvious reason to reject such an approach is (hat it totally defeats the purpose of college itself See the difference between high school and college is that in high school you're an adolescent In college you’re presumed a young adult and that’s why you're given much more freedom then in high school For one thing attendance is not taken You're parents aren't called if you don't do good on a lest You live in the dorms on your own which means you're given greater control of your own life CEU's elites feel as though people are so irresponsible that they'll starve because they won't save their money but it’s OK to allow students to live in a cooking dorm room where they will be responsible for paying for food to cook or it's acceptable to give students loans and expect them to pay baL'k right on the day it's due To me college is supposed to begin training you for life Who exactly am I going to be giving my money to when I'm out of college so that I can make sure I cat? Mysdf of course so why am I not given that choice? Another reason to go against mandatory meal purchasing is because it doesn't allow students to have a voice I f I can't avoid being on a meal plan then I really can't say much against the hours I'll he receiving my food now will I? Oik student told me that he doesn't eat anymore because he's hungry but he cals when Hal and company say it's time to cat I mean conK on The cafeteria allows you to purchase a meal plan where you can cat breakfast hut it serves the hot breakfast at 6:45 in the morning Can you honestly tell me that you're typical college student will he getting up that early? But hey it's alright because students can come in and get a add howl ofeercal anytime alter that What about the fact that students who pay for meals have box if their in a hurry or have other to follow certain “procedures" just to get a things to do In my opinion this shouldn't be the case Students because they ore required to pay for a meal plan should he able to determine when they will cat and whether they will cat in the cafeteria or somewhere else Sec the issue isn't ftxxl hut rather the establishment behind the food I think that it's definitely time we begin to sec some changes in the fond services offered My proposal is this: let's surprise the cafeteria with an inspection of the food being dished out every day and the conditions it's prepared in That will settle my stomach in regards to what I ' m putting into it As far as me eating steak I want a third who isn't associated with the school- - to check out (Ik financial hooks because I want to know exactly where my money is going to Maybe it's me hut I'm curious as to what's in that big safe in the hack of the cafeteria I understand (hat important papers arc probably stored there hut I just wonder Is that w here most of I my money goes to because I rcallydon'l feel it goes into the food cat? Wc'rc dealing with a minimal budget of $ 50 (XX) per year to feed how many students and cover non-cooki- to-g-o parly-somco- nc 1 the necessary overhead? Look I personally don't have a problem with the people that work at the cafeteria I love talkingtocachand every one of them and I tlumk them fort lie service they give me each and every day I just feel like I'm trapped between a hard rock and Hal's I place We students solely because of the policies implemented by both la! and Joe Glorioso seem to entrap students Joe tells students that he won't allow them to live dorms if they don't have a meal plan and charges more fix axiking facilities I low convenient is that? I could he wrong but I doubt my stomach would lie to me Which reminds me ikxs anybody have any Pepto-Bisntoin non-axiki- l? a contestant presents any form of poetry by reading and usingexprcssionsand gestures Story poetry is a favorite among most competitors and rhyme lends to not do as well 2 Prose a reading with at least 50 percent dialogue present short stories are mostly used hoe 3 Dramatic interpretation a reading cutting from a play or playwright manuscript monologues are often used 4 Programmed oral interpretation- a competitor takes a general theme like "cartoons" or "arson" and creates a presentation using at least three different sources of genre all focusing on lhal one main point or theme 5 Duo interpretation in this event two competitors work together portraying a "duo" or couple in a scene from a play Two events ire represented in the limited preparation area 1 Impromptu speaking - a competitor selects one of the three topics given to them and has seven minutes to prepare and deliver a speech No visual aids or note cards of any kind may be used Most competitors use one minute for preparation and then deliver a speech 2 Extemsimilar to imporaneous speaking but a competitor has 30 minpromptu utes to prepare and seven for the speech Topics deal with national and internasix-min- tional current events The last area is platforms: 1 communication analysis- - in this event competi- tors present a speech that analyzes an act of communication This act being any statement in our society that represents a form of communication like a billboard speech bumperslickcr commercial and etc One analyzes this act by applying a methodology a series of steps used in science to evaluate and draw conclusions 2 Persuasive - "oratory" is another word here for this event Emphasis in this speech is on how well one is able to persuade their audience and also the reasoning behind the change or movement 3 Informative - just what it says a speech to inform the audience on any particular subject or topic Emphasis is put on topics that are new to the audience or to bring out fascinating and unseen information on sn old idea or subject 4 After dinner speaking one of the more eqjoyable events among competitors A serious point is made or broughtupto the audience but in a comical or humorous time way Platforms have limits and visual aides are often used In the debate portion of forensics there are four main areas: three team events and one single "Lincoln Douglas Debate" is the lone one person event Competitors argue over a certain resolution (decided at the beginning of the year) usingvalue and criteria as there means of argumentation ones own analyzation is of great importance here "CEDA" or (Cross Examination Deteam bate Association) is a debate Teams debate a resolution previously set forth taking sides affirmative and negative or for or against Cases are presented along with many facts and statistics And "parliamentary debate" is where a team debates with no evidence Teamstry tooutwiteachothcrby defining the resolution in their worts and applying a great deal of humor throughout the round In each debafc event different times and roles apply ten-minu- te two-pers-on 1998 after Jan For this reason CEU will not be requiring the $10350 & fee deposit for winter quarter only The lees will still have to be claim Jan to 998 he eligible Beginning paid fix winter hut if you plan on taking the tax credit taxpayers tnay a nonrcfunduhlc Hope Scholarship Credit of $1 5(X) against 1998 ix alter If any please defer your payment until Jan their inamw taxes A student is eligible for the lax credit their payment is made for tuition and fees during 1997 the first year of college and if they maintain a I) average and stay amount cannot he used fix the I lope Scliolarsliip in 1998 If off drugs they would receive an additional $I5(X) tax credit you do not wish to take the lax credit or are not eligible fix their seaNkl year Students nuiy lake into account only out payment may he made in 1997 of pocket expenses (tuition and tecs) in calculating their Registration will amtinuc through the month of Decemcredit Tuition and fees paid by a Pell Grant or other tax free ber except for Dec 5 The admissions and records a tax free from Educational IRA an distribution IxHirs arc 8 am to 5 pm All student's accounts must office scholarships or tax free employer provided cducationti! assistance cannot he paid in full in order to register he taken into account in calculating the credit amount All Any questions regarding payment please contact Jan in monies used calculating the tax credit must be paid on or 0 ext 5205 Young in the admission's office or call 1 Tax credits 1 scholarships 1 1 24-2- 627-212- |
