Show "Tke o-- p vo-t-oe- - Does anybody have any Mike Zahller tke by Amber Saupan editor When students on academic scholarships about the raffling off of CEU scholar- for ships practically nothing many had mixed feeling about the value of their education at CCU Here are a few of their comments : Ashley Riddle (19) sophomore Major: history "This action performed by CEU shows me that the administration really does not care how they get their students This makes me very angry I worked hard in high school to get the 1 have and it seems unfair that the scholarship person who won this raffle did not have to compete acadcmi- cally or other way for the scholarship they were "awardol Janae Goodmansen (18) freshman Major: nursing "I think that really stinks because 1 had to work hard for my scholarship" Bryan Wicher (18) freshman Major engineering "I think it’s alright because it gets more people down here and everybody deserves a chance at an education" Mike Anderson (18) freshman ' Major G E “If they are getting free scholarships they should have more requirements to keep them than we do because they were handed it and we earned it" viewpoint editor Thanksgiving break is one of my favorite times during the year Not only do you get to he with friends and family but you get to eat tons of food and watch football while sipping on a cold glass of Egg Nog Unlike most years where I'm home for the holidays this year was a little different For one thing my wallet decided that it would be best if 1 passed on buying a plane ticket home to Colorado With that decision made for me I was left with one more choice to make Either I could stay in Price --oh jo-y- or I could accept an invitation to stay at a friend's house in Salt Lake Needless to say I chose the latter of the two Like every holiday weekend though Thanks giving came and passed and my friends and 1 headed down the canyon to return to CEU still lingering from the weekend events Monday came around and it was once again time to visit the cafeteria for a little dinner I ordered the usual -- a couple cheeseburgers and some frie- s- and sat to eat only to realize that I Pepto-Bismo- l? had suddenly lost my appetite I was shocked and I tried local a little here and (here but it just didn't are set up so as to block students from exploring olicroptionsofattainingfood Let me start with the work so I began to ask what other people thought of the cafeteria services concept of the “meal plan” To the best of my knowledge there are approximately 100 or so students who have purchased some form of a meal plan If you're aware ot the prices of meal plans you probably know that the cheapest one is about $500 per quarter It’s referred to as the 10-- which means you only get to eat two meals aday five days a week That $500 times three quarters equals about $1500 per student a year You times that amount by about 100 students and that means the cafeteria is making-a- t a bare minimum- - about $150000 per yearjust by sel'ing its cheapest meal plan to every student who is currently on one Wow I should be eating steak every night because I know for a solid fact that not every student who eats at the cafeteria is just on the 10-- 5 But I'm not and I'm dumbfounded as to why Anyone who's picked up a student guide while Overall students felt (hat the cafeteria was just that: a school cafeteria They felt the cafeteria personnel did their job in that it guaranteed students wouldn’t go hungry by providing them with a hot meal However other students expressed some concerns over the food-- as expected-a-nd the operation of the cafeteria itself Some people told me that the food was negatively affecting their health somehow and that they didn't like the fact that they were required to pay for it simply because they lived in a dorm While I agree with all of these viewpoints I believe that non-cooki- there's more than meets the eye (literally) when it conics to the cafeteria In my opinion the cafeteria is nothing more than a monopoly because not only docs it demand that students buy what it has to sell but its policies 5 See Pepto-Bism- ol on page 3 Abe Lincoln did not remodel while studying by Shelly Jeppaon staff writer Abraham Lincoln has long been a her j for the American people I le is admired for his leadership during the Civil War as well as for his honesty The struggles he went through to achieve greatness are truly an inspiration for all of us Who among us has not realized the value of an education alter hearing how he would walk for miles to borrow books? We have to admire his determination to learn With no disrespect intended to our sixteenth president I challenge the notion that hiseducation was truly difficult After all there is no historical evidence that Abe Lincoln ever remodeled his home while attending school I personally have tried this and can attest to the fact that the sound of hammers drills and saws makes concentration extremely difficult Being without a kitchen has its drawbacks but being unable to fix goodies was the only thing enabling me to blend in with all of the gorgeous 8 to 20 year-ol- d women on campus I am probably the only student to ever wear a dust mask while doing homework Covered in dry wall I would climb into the shower every evening to wash the gray out of my hair I had to inspect my clothing frequently lest some fellow student should sec the dust on my shoulders and recommend Head and Shoulders Abe Lincoln grew up in humble circumstances in a tiny log cabin I have lived in a home with only n an inverted bucket as a hack step One I as was day entering my home by way of my five I gallon stairs slipped and fell I literally kicked the bucket and ended up with huge bruises extending from my thigh to my ankle While exiting my home one day I ripped the seat out of a my favorite pair of jeans because my beagle had lipped my stairs over Someday when I finally received my degree and go forward to make my mark upon the world perhaps people will also be inspired by my struggles I will have contributed to science by opening my home for a large scale study of dust mites The abstract kitchen will provide help and lutpe to dieters everywhere and dust masks will he as available to the public as condoms Scholars and critics will debate over whether or not my earliest writings could have been influenced by (lie paint fumes I was breathing at home Perhaps they will even erect a monument in my 1 five-gallo- will be portrayed wearing a dust mask My hand will hold a paintbrush skyward in like manner to the Statue of Liberty's torch My free arm will cradle some textbooks and one leg will be perched atop a bucket Being the humble person 1 am I wouldn't really want my name associated with such a monument It will have to be known simply as The Masked Student honor I five-gallo- n |
