Show r L I I Lack of I Intercollegiate te Sports at J b 3 oa i By Kyle Spencer Horizon Sports i Another school year has begun and students return to school ready and excited for the academic year There are several reasons to be proud to be a Bruin We have a a- lovely campus with green grass newly remodeled buildings an excellent faculty a promising and basketball teams with outstanding reputations Speaking of sports at a question arises in my mind Why are there only mens men's and women's basketball teams Granted basketball is a fun and exciting exciting exciting ex ex- ex- ex citing sport but so are volleyball volleyball volleyball vol vol- vol- vol soccer and tennis We have adequate facilities and there seems to be no lack of strapping young men and women on our fair campus Why then is basketball basketball basketball bas bas- bas bas- the only sport in which we compete with other schools Perhaps I am wrong Are our facilities in fact not adequate Is there a lack of interested athletes Or are people simply more interested interested interested inter inter- ested in playing quality sack hackey-sack than making that awesome drive to the soccer goal With these questions needling needling needling nee nee- at my brain I approached approached approached ap ap- ap- ap eight of our staff and students for some reasonable answers I asked What are your feelings about the lack of intercollegiate intercollegiate intercollegiate intercol intercol- sports participated in by These are the answers I received I see our basketball team as being one of the integral parts of campus life I think II I- I r r I that in the future well we'll see them add more The only pr problem blem is funding those programs Team spirit does provide a sense of belonging belonging belonging belong belong- ing and school pride which we need Jeff Ross Faculty I would like to see more because I am an around all-around athlete Rob Spence Fresh man manThis manThis manThis This school is too cal More team spirit would help with morale Lisa Student Keene We dont don't have state funding funding funding fund fund- ing for intercollegiate sports Most other Utah colleges colleges colleges col col- leges do Rick Weeks Stu dent Volleyball and baseball should be sports of the fu fu- fu- fu ture Other junior colleges in Utah dont don't have tennis teams We looked into in to the prospect of soccer and it is cost prohibitive BYU has a team but they are obviously out of our league We talked to Westminster and they said there are four schools in Denver who needed per game to come here to play and they wont won't pay us to go there We and Utah Valley are the only schools in Utah that arent aren't state funded We Weare Weare Weare are student funded When we have more Intercollegiate intercollegiate intercollegiate intercol intercol- sports we will attract attract attract at at- tract more traditional students than non Craig For- For man Faculty It takes time to grow As we grow and get more help we probably should seemore see seemore seemore more sports added I would like to see volleyball added I think that if mens men's volleyball volleyball volleyball vol vol- vol- vol were instigated it would be a hot item Jean Faculty It doesn't matter that basketball basketball basketball bas bas- bas bas- is the only sport now We have only had the program for three years In time we will expand to other sports Tank Col Col- lins Basketball Player I We get blamed for every every- thing It would be nice if there were some volleyball players to help share the responsibility Tyron Greer Basketball Player Aha So those are the I reasons I am still not convinced convinced convinced con con- vinced that we should be limited to having only a basketball basketball basketball bas bas- bas bas- team I think that we need more school teams This subject is not dead Readers who share my concern concern concern con con- cern or have more information information tion on this subject please make yourselves heard |
