Show BROOKINS WINS SjMOO PRIZE STRING FIELD, 111., Sept. 29. Aviator Avi-ator Brookins alighted in the fair grounds here at 4:27 p. ni. today, seven sev-en hours and twelve minutes out of Chicago, after having sailed his Wright bi plane the 192 1-2 miles with two 6tops. They were at Gilman. III., SI miles from Chicago, at 11:30 a. in., I and at Mount Pulaski. Ill, 1S6 miles from Chicago, at 3 p. ra. The first slop was for water, oil and gasoline; the second for that and because his pump had broken and the engine became be-came heated. Brooklns, in his long sail broke the American long distance conliuucd flight record and thereby won the 51 u 000 prize offered by the Chlcuco Reeord-lkrald, which conducted the attempt Throngs Gather. Wherever the aviator alighted, throngs gathered to stare at Ihe man and to sec what an areoplane looked like at short range. As Brooklns rose into the air at Mount Pulaski, one of the small rubber-tired wheels of the areoplane struck a hammock and was wrenched off. Brooklns reached the fair grounds eight minutes before the station was reached by the Illinois Central fast special train. He made the dip to alight at 4:27 p. m.. making seven hours and twlove minutes elapsed time from the start in Chicago. The acutal flying rate was 5 hours, 41 minutes, min-utes, an average flying rate of 33' miles an hour. Brooklns found difficulty in alight Ing because of Inadequate policing of the grounds, and si though he arrived over iho grounds at 4:22. It was five mlnu'.es later before he could land. The crowd surged about him. threatening to crush the curious bird machine, till he had to make a personal per-sonal appeal to get the throng back When the Chicago crowd arrived at the grounds, nearly half an hour after the aviator, he- said to a Chicago newspaper man, who was his passenger passen-ger on the day before, and who was the first to reach him: "Where have you been all the time? I got here and have been waiting wait-ing to lunch with you as I promised. Here you have, kept me waiting half au hour " Asked about the flight he said: Describes Trip. "Why it was nothing only stayinr up, that't all. It merely took lime more than usual and that's about thu only difference from a practice flight I knew I could make it. It was one of the pretliet flights I ever made. The country between Chicago nnd here is delightful. Wherever I was flying low enough and I went as low as 300 feet several times I could see the people staring up at me from j every acre almost There must have been three-fourths of a million looking j at me I "My arms are tired, of course, and 1 it was a strain because I had In watch ! all the while, but 1 am cood for tbo ' same thing right now If necessary, i Wilbur Wright's only comment was I "As the woman says, '1 told you h0"' |
