Show CHICKENS COME HOME TO ROOST. A dirty dodger in the form of a circular defaming the business integrity in-tegrity of Dr. Plummcr, the republican republi-can nominee for mayor, was gotten out a week ago by the democratic city committee and distributed broad cast under its auspices. The ''dodger" ''dod-ger" purported to be an abstract of certain judgments obtained about a dozen years ago in jusMccs' courts against Dr. Plummer and others for small amounts which judgments, the circular untruthfully says, have never been satisfied. The impression is given by the circular that those judgments judg-ments were for sums of money ow-ing ow-ing by Dr. Pluinmcr and that he evaded payment. The facts arc entirely en-tirely to the contrary and the compilers com-pilers and interiors of the circular knew it and know it now. One of the judgments was for $140 and costs and was rendered against Dr. Plummer and two others. The debt was contracted in this way. It will be remembered that a good many years ago the Rev. Dr. Mabry, then pastor of the First Methodist church, was arrested on a sensational charge of immorality. Pending the trial, Mabry was released on a bond upon which twenty or more of the most prominent citizens became sureties. Dr. Plummcr was one of the sure-tics. sure-tics. The other two gentlemen against whom with Dr. Plummer the judgment judg-ment was obtained were also sureties. sure-ties. Mabry became a fugitive from justice and the bondsmen were railed upon to pay the amount of the bond. Dr. Plummcr not only paid his own share but the share of the two friends who were with him on the note. The judgment was fully paid and satisfied satis-fied by Dr. Plummer. If there is anything any-thing discreditable to Dr. Plummer in that it is up to the democratic committee to say what it is. Another of the judgments was for some $177 obtained on a note signed by a young man named John A. Spik-cr Spik-cr who had been unfortunate in business. busi-ness. Purely as a matter of friendship friend-ship and kindness, Dr. Plummcr endorsed en-dorsed the note, thus becoming surety sure-ty for its payment. With Dr. Plum-mcr's Plum-mcr's endorsement Mr. Spiker was enabled to cash the note. He got all the money and applied it to his own use. He was unable to pay the note when it became due and the holder hol-der obtained judgment against both Mr. Spiker and Dr. Plummer. Dr. Plummer was not even aware that judgment had been obtained on the note which was afterwards paid in full by Mr. Spiker. This is Mr. Spik-cr's Spik-cr's own statement of the matter and it is fully verified. If there is anything any-thing discreditable to Dr. Plummcr in this transaction, perhaps Ex-Mayor Morris and his democratic campaign cam-paign committee can tell what it is. Another of those terrible judgments judg-ments was for $8, a disputed charge for feeding a horse. The amount was fully paid by Dr. Plummcr. Detestation for such campaign methods me-thods is very general in the community. commun-ity. The difficulty with the average citizen, whatever his politics, is to find words strong enough to express his contempt for such a proceeding and his opinion of those who conceived con-ceived the plan and carried it into execution and of the candidate who was willing to receive benefit from such methods. The circular as is generally the case with such things, had an effect the very opposite to what was hoped for by the scurvy crowd that conceived it. It made many votes for Dr. Plummcr Plum-mcr and the entire republican ticket. |
