"Each of the operas is cqmp letely double cast," Carol Ann Modesitt, director of th e productions and a member of the SUU music faculty, said. "Because of the multiple casting, each nigh t's production will vary somewhat from other presentations as the leadi ng performers bring their visions of the characters they portray to the srage." The two relatively short operas will be the second and third works by Men otti to be performed at SUU this academic year. "The 1997-98 school year has been a Menotti celebration for the SUU Opera Theatre," Modesitt points out. 11 All of the operas performed during the year, including Amalil and the Night Visitors, have been composed by Menotti." Menotti anticipates the effect of electronic communications on relationships in The Telephone. The opera tells the story of Ben, who, in trying to propose to Lucy, is continually interrupted by Lucy's passion for her telephone and the conversational life that seems more real to her than the young man who adores her. The Old Maid and the Thief tells how the combination of the competing needs for love by two From left: Kara Frost, Sandy; Malinda Clove, Nevada City, Calif.; and Georgia Meyers, Salt Lake City, in a scene from Gian-Carlo Menotti's 'The Old Maid and The Thief.' one of two one-act operettas now running at SUU.
