I(jrk R. Thornock, a junior from Ely, Nev., was presented the award at a recent Engineering Week banquet hosted by the university. "The outstanding engineering award is made annually to the student who shows the most promise as an engineer and who best exemplifies the quality of students enrolled in the preengineering program," Richard I(jmball, professor of engineering and physical science at SUU, said. "A plaque listing the annual award winners is placed on permanent display in the Science Center on campus." Thornock, the son of D ean and Susan Thornock, graduated from White Pine High as the valedictorian of his class with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He is a two-time Nevada all-state football player and a three-time all-stater in baseball. He currently carries a 3.987 GPA at SUU. He earned varsity athletic letters in baseball and football as a .freshman at SUU before serving an LOS mission in Fortaleza, Brazil. Thomock's timetable calls for a degree in civil engineering in May of 1999. He is married to the former fulie Foster, Duchesne. "We are fortunate to have this quality of students in our program," Kimball said. "Students of this caliber are on a course toward successful and productive engineering careers." Preventing teen pregnancy teleconference scheduled Teen pregnancy prevention will be the subject of a two-day teleconference which will be downlinked to sites at Southern Utah University and Dixie College. The March 30-31 live broadcast from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center will be available in Room 204 of the Electronic Learning Center on the SUU Campus or in the EdNet Conference Room of the Dixie College Student Services Center. · Presented by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Region Vl of Family Planning, the teleconference is sponsored locally by the Southwest Utah Area Health Education Center (AHEC). Conference hours are 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 30 and 7:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. March 31. Conference sessions are free, unless continuing education units (CEUs) are being awarded, according to Rita Osborn, associate director of the Southwest Utah AHEC. CEU registration is $20. Space limitations require advance registration, which can be completed by calling (435) 8658520. . "In addition to the broadcast itself, time will also be utilized at each southern Utah site to develop a community plan to deal with the problem of teen pregnancies, 11 Osborn said.
