Page 4 SOUTH HIGH SCRIBE " p-- - m Ball Crew Gathers Thunder For Pinmey Game Gilbertmen Set Practice Tilt For Sunday at Community; Dalebout Heads Horsehiders Showing great promise after a month of practice, South baseball ers have settled down to regular preseason play by scheduling a game with the powerful Pinney Beverage semipro nine, Sunday, at Community Park. The brand of ball that Coach Gilbert's men have displayed so far this spring give definite indU cations of another championship for South in baseball. The Sun-day contest will give observers their first chance to see the '43 Baseball Schedule West at South... April 22 South at East April 29 South at West May 13 East at South May 20 edition in action and will give the players badly needed experience, against a powerful team. Jerry Dalebout, star second baseman for the Cub team was selected unanimously as team cap-tain and willj do the brainwork for the organization, prompted by Coach Gilbert. Jake held down the second base spot on last year's championship team and played a major part in the taking of the crown. Jimmy has a very smooth work-ing infield consisting of Don Shep-har- d at third, Glen Standing at short, "Captain" Dalebout at sec-ond, and Abe Berthold at the first sack. The Standing-Dalebout-Ber-tho-ld combination is particularly adept in twin killings and Shepherd does a mighty good job of cover-ing the "hot corner." Four candidates, Paul Roberts, Eldon Story, Leonard Trottier and "Spider" Woodward vie for the starting outfield positions. Roberts and Story will probably play left and center field respectively with Woodward and Trottier waging a hot battle for the "sun" field spot. Southpaw Kent Peterson is ready and rax-in- ' to go and will probably start both the Sunday contest and the city opener against West high on the 22nd of this month. Dean Christensen rates the number one right hander spot on the pitching staff and is slated for plenty of action. The catching assignment is still wide open. Bob Story, last year's starting catcher, hasn't shown up in all the practice sessions, leaving the way open for such newcomers as little Dick Powers and Wayne Cooper. Both of these men show lots of class behind the plate, i Ai Emmertson, brilliant South pitcher, now slingin' for Uncle Sam, Performances of some South players this year may yet rank them in his class. Room 216 Takes S.A.M. Tourney With 36-3- 0 Win Room 216 walked off with the honors in the annual SAM home room basketball tourney by down-ing 206's hard fighting "fools" 36-3- 0 in the finals Wednesday, March 24. Rooms 219, 206, 216 and 222 reached the semifinal round by defeating rooms 110, 326, 104 and 202 respectively. Dick Brower, flashy player from 206, took high point honors with fourteen counters. Kent Peterson was second with twelve. The lineup, for the champion-ship game is: . East and West will tee off in the first trackfest on April 16, and South will meet the Panther crew on April 30 on the Cub cinders. The Cubs will attempt to boost their record string this year. South has annexed some 10 records out of 16 city track and field events. Track Schedule West at South April 30 South at East May 7 Triangular meet May 14 Mass meet -- ...May 20 Former Cubs who have helped to notch up the gonfalons include Mac Speedie, Clarence Gehrke, and Chick ' Brown, all outstanding sportsmen. The names of Van Cott, Woolf, Jackson, Kilboume, and perhaps other unheralded "dark horses" may be added to the list of South track greats. These boys form the nucleus of the champ team. And the Southerners will be the team to beat this year! , Invitational meets for the track-ster- s have been cancelled because of existing war difficulties. In its stead, a mass meet is set for May 20. Particulars are in the hands of Coach Long. Elimination Tourney To Pick 1943 Veteran Net Squad Future tennis team members will in all probability be selected from the "select rounders" participat-ing in Pat Ryan's current school tennis tournament. This tournament, consisting of a junior and senior bracket, was open to all boys in the school. As a result, a large representation was found in both brackets. There were fifteen juniors and eighteen I seniors, respectively, in the first round playoffs. In the senior division, returning lettermen of last year have hit their stride and gym wing observ-ers predict a hot fight for the school championship between Doug Heiner, Joe Bonny and Dick Brow-er. There are many varied opin-ions as to which of this trio will win, as they are all evenly match-ed. These games should be inter-esting and should provide tennis fans at South an opportunity to see good tennis on their own courts. . Other senior players showing professional form and plenty of style are Eddie Anderson, Howard Richardson, Lou Dods, and How-ard Green. All of the above men-tioned are very good players and can be found almost every night practicing on the Cub courts. These are some of the things to watch if you find time to watch these games Heiner's drives, Brower's serve, Bonny's duds and Green's facial expressions. Much like the senior division, the junior bracket is packed with po-tential stars and "coach" Ryan will have difficulty selecting his squad. Faithful gym wing observers rate Mel Adam and Don Giacomo as the men to watch in this tourney. Both have good form and a fine assortment of shots. Other con-testants showing promise are An-ton Peterson, Gordon Milne, Wally Jones, Grant Jenkins and Hugh Miller. Who knows, this may be our year to drop East from their long held title shelf. Swimmers Meet With "Do or Drowned" as their motto, the swimming club meets every week in room 222, and al-though the club was not formed until a short time ago, it is roll-ing along smoothly, according to the club president, Bob Neilson. Jimmy Gilbert sponsors this health clinic. Swimming takes place at the Deseret ,gym and Municipal pool. Anyone wishing to join this club needs only to attend the meetings. - - - - - - - - y " ' DON'T FORGET THAT ' BEST FRIEND A KID a ; EVER HAD, AND PRE- - v SENT HER WITH A COR- - SAGE TO SHOW YOUR LOVE FOR ; Mothers Day ; : GARSIDE FLOWER : SHOP ; Located KRESS STORE Where a guy can shop to fit his pocket book and still be proud of his choice . w 1 j SOUTH STATE j CLEANERS j So.
