TOWN May 20Special Correspondence Corre-spondence of TIIE HEUAID Tho Bear Lake busy body being abroad and knowing know-ing that you like good news thought he would send you a few items that your many esteemed readers may know something some-thing concerning this land wo love Tee stlko conference was the chief object ob-ject of attraction in this country last Sunday Sun-day and Monday From nearly all the towns villages and hamlets of Bear Lake and Rich counties rolled out buggies and wagons laden with devout humanity to attend at-tend the great gathering of the season at Paris Idaho Just previous to the time of the convention the weather clerk had given us some copious rainfalls and then a dry spell for a day or so which made our roads all that we could ask for and a drive around the shores of OUJl BEAUTIFUL LVKE was one of the most lovely things of life The days of conference were likewise salubrious sal-ubrious The days were quite warm and the nights cool enough to make blankets thick and warm a positive luxury The tabernacle is not quite completed so the conferences are still held in the First Ward school and meetinghouse which was comfortably packed on Sunday morning and the assemblage increased till on Mondav afternoon several hundreds failed to gain an entrance Apostle John AV Taylor and Elder James E Talmage favored us with their presence and gave the people some excellent spiritual spirit-ual and intellectual food I think that no previous conference exceeded ex-ceeded this in interest and utility The remarks re-marks were listened to with marked attention and strangers and saints alike must have felt the influences and power manifest upon the occasion A healthy and neat appearing people is always present at our Bear Lake conferences confer-ences and comparison with older and more favored peoples would not cause us to blush There are iu the Mormcu church in Bear Lake stake 1030 families aggregating 0951 souls Of this number lObT are under eight years 230 i are lay church members mem-bers and 1JKO are oflicial members as follows fol-lows patriarchs one seventies 235 high priests 12 ciders 52s priests twenty nine teachers foiU nine and deacons 3G2 or in round figures about one officer to two members and less than one to live of the entire church pupulation This being but a sample of the church at large what becomes of the priesthood oneinan denorninationbugaboo soreheads The bishops reports were quite interesting interest-ing These showed there had been a little sickness among the children THE GENEKAL HEALTH of adults was good There was a great deal of material progress in the stake which was spiritually i l nourishing ifei Those Bear Lake bishops are wonderful rustlers just the right kind of a crowd to build up a country such as ours The boys all feel like helping them Paris booms to the front with a fine court house and two mercantile institutions institu-tions carrying the signs of Paris Coop and Hoge Davis Company Both these had the sand to close during conference Of course they would close during Sunday any way but when they shut up on Monday because of conference I could not help saying say-ing good for thent I admire integrity and selfsacrifice Gentile Jew Christian and especially in a Mormon I hope some of the rest of our merchants will go ando do likewise even if they should lose mine and the noble six hundreds nickels for I peanuts The stake tabernacle is a very fine building build-ing rapidly nearing completion It will cost S50000 about forty thousand dollars of which is now paid up and it is expected that next August conference will be held in it and it will be dedicated if the people I will respond to the call for the remaining 10000 necessary to finish the work Paris private dwellihgs also arc by no means to be sniffed at Every time quarterly conference convenes some one or more of its rustling citizens have new houses and each tries to see that the last house is best and prettiest Thus Paris becomes and remains what she ought to be the chief city of southeastern Idaho and her neighboring souttiern county Spelling reform has not lost its hold upon some of the people even in that locality A sign reads Dress making dun here What wo say of the growth of Paris applies tl eriiJ J plies very much to her southern Idaho neighbors Bloomington St Charles and Fish Haven TI1IBEK IS PLENTIFUL and many nice neat domiciles and meeting and schoolhouses have been erected and a Godfearing honest industrious people inhabit in-habit them In short were I to merely itemize their virtues and good deeds jou rlide regiiig I would have to issue a special edition forBear for-Bear Lake Crossing the line between Idaho and Utah three miles south of Fish Haven oi hm which by reason of its many trees nice dwellings and its being bo close to the lake is one of our prettiest towns we soon reach Garden City This town is truly named No nicer garden truck on earth of the kinds than they raise here The people live upon the produce of their gardens more than from fanning and they make the best success of tho former industry of any town in Rich county Beautiful for situation I many people now come and spend summer weeks and months there A citizen informed in-formed me that last year the number of visitors was double that 9f the year before and that a further doubling was expected this year It is right on the road from southern Idaho to Logan and the climate during the summer the delicious small fruits and garden sass that abound in the land have Ian attraction that farmers soon recognize and a good thing always gets well advertised Coming from thence our soul leaped within us when we read on the outside of a little log cabin in the lane posted so that he who runs maj read the following Notice MEDICINE TO Cunc ALL COMPLAINTS ALSO ACHES AND PAINES ALSO CU KE FOR DKOPST AND CANCEU Being slightly impecunious and the good cureall doctor not having stated how he bold his aches and paines whether bj retail or wholesale I was compelled to abstain from investing iu his panaceas Beers Valley owned by E S Risbing Company is a charming place about a mile south of Garden City Those gentlemen have recently put iu a force ol men and doubled tho water supply in THE OAHDEN CITY BITCH and in return get onethird of the whole drn ncf ge stream and Garden City gets the two thirds I think this arrangement is mutually satisfactory to the parties concerned con-cerned and will doubtless be a good thing all around About nine miles from Garden City lies Meadowville in the southwest end of the valley Squire Joseph Kimball presides there as bishop This place is very aptly denominated There are very beautiful meadows They seem to be considerably afflicted with squirrels but strychnine and the bishops natural ingenuity are a match for them and I guess the squirrels will have to hunt their holes and die by the hundreds hun-dreds this season Bishop Kimball had his residence moved from the old town which is down in the damp part of the precinct to the nice plat I north of town and is now on dry land He and his few neighbors have started some I shade trees and prospects favor the prediction pre-diction that thatA A NICE LITTLE TOWN will soon appear on the scene full fledged and developed The new canal to it is a I I success and the worthy dignitary feels very greatly encouraged Many will migrate from the old to the new town as soon as practicable But lovelier meadows than those in this little burg even a HEKALU scribe may never expect ex-pect to see that is in this country Laketown four miles from Meadowville was reached by the U S mail wagon in due time A glorious outfit carries this mail A practical joke occurred while we were traveling but whether on the carrier or the carried I cant tell Suffice it to say that it came to pass that at Bishop Kimballs place a change of horse was necessary nec-essary There was a S1975horse in a pasture pas-ture hired by said carrier and a S2025 horse in the shafts Awaiting the exchange of the valuable steed in the shafts for the less valuable one in the pasture deponent and a couple of other worthies started out on a very leisurely walk and after conversing con-versing with a mutual friend for twenty minutes behold it came to pass that the 195horse and the carrier and mailng hailed us on the Lake Town side of the creek the blooming pedestrians having tramped the distance of two miles Then we boarded the vehicle and we found that there were about six hundred pounds avoirdupois of humanity afloat not to mention the mail sack and probably several ounces of mail matter A society for the prevention of cruelty to animals could have made itself immortal just thenbut the dm Ju i h question i would remain unsettled which class of animal suffered more the human or the equine LtKB TOWS IS A DUST of a little place right at the mouth of theca the-ca 10n of the same name It possesses a burr stone grist mill The proprietor is soon going to put in a new roller mill and then flouring and Lake Town alike will bloom gloriously The Coop store does an excellent business busi-ness and its manager claims that its success suc-cess is unexcelled in these mountains One sawmill has operated a while and another has been placed at Big Creek Now the citizen who said he did not want to die in Lake Town because he would not be sure of enough lumber to be buried in may go and insure for he will soon be able to have it on short notice There is a neat and commodious meeting house in this burg also one larger and one smaller hall The larger is used for religious services and the smaller for day school The latter is filled with Triumph desks and a good supply of charts maps globes etc AFarmington young gentleman Mr G W Palmer teaches the school and gives good satisfac ion Seventyeight pupils were enrolled last term and the two rooms were occupied and two teachers held forth therein Lake Town has au A No 1 dramatic troupe Like the rest of the Rich county settlements settle-ments it has done a great deal in the way of ditch construction Private dwellings arc going up and improvements im-provements constantly bene made IraN Ira-N Esq has a nice residence beautifully beauti-fully situated Many have caught the boom fever and building is going on more rapidly than ever Lake Town has the best location for a pretty place in the valley and all we need is time and Gods blessings and I think well get there BUM BODY |
