Show 3fB BOYLES RECITAL The Yonnr Actor Makes a Decided Impression Upon a Cultured Audience Two hundred and fifty ladies and gentlemena representation of the cultured cul-tured and intellectual classes of our communiy assembled at Independence Independ-ence Hall last evening to hear Mr Edwin Ed-win M Boyles recital of the immortal play of Julius Casar It is paying the young actor the highest possible com pllment tosay that from the beginning to the end and it was 1030 when the final words were uttered the interest neverwA7 red but it was throughout of that intense breathless character which only the utmost appreciation can draw forth Mr Royle decidedly made an unqualified success The play was divided di-vided into periods the greater epochs of It joined by brief and simple but elegant ele-gant narrative and those parts that otter the finest opportunity for the actor such aa the lorum scene the quarrel between Brutus and Caseins tbe farewell the scene between Bru tus and Portia and Brutus soliloquy on the death of his wife etevrere done verbatim aa found in So play jook Of all the selections w esteem the forum scene as done the best and of all the characters that of Casalus the most faithful protrayed The intensity in-tensity with which ho in vested ttxi lean aud hungry conspirator wai thrIlling The noble speech of Antony was in fine contrast to this and was excellently rendered Were we inclined to pink out a fault we should say that sometimes In the earlier part of the recitsi the character Brutn was not portrayed with that breadth that repose with which the imagination invests Itwith which for instanceLouis James i wuot to delineate it in tho quarrel with Cas sius however and in the scene where he mourns over the memory of tis wife the part of Bratus was filled upto the deal Mr Royle is a very younj mm nvet and be sometimes licks what may be termed force in rcpott but that quality comes only with long experience Jis grace gestures tire and power ot portraying emotion are something little short of remarkable His knowledge of gesture in particular and themany little details of side and byplay arc as perfect as onesees in the accomplished sor of years experience The recltt was frequently interrupted inter-rupted with bursts of the most genuine and admiring applause It is not statIng stat-Ing it too strongly to say that he crea ed a decIded sensation and the mnnner in which he will pass through his nextnnd it must be said his morn trying on1 alan al-an appearance in society drama will be curiously and interestedly watched hy all who were present He assumes the leading character with th Home Dramatic Club in the Bankers Daughter July 10th |
