OIlOlQOII Owlz win twice, near playoff berth Russ Lyman NORTH COUNTY It would have been easy for the Orem Owlz to give up on Saturday night in Orem. In the bottom of the ninth inning, in-ning, Orem was facing one of the Pioneer League's top pitchers pitch-ers in Casper's Randall Taylor, who had a 0.90 ERA. The Owlz had a 2-1 deficit and an offense that had shown little life throughout the game. Also, the next four batters due up were a combined l-for-12 on the night. However, despite all that was going against them, Gordie Gronkowski and the Owlz had other ideas in their 3-2 win over the Rockies. After Jeremy Moore drew a lead-off walk to start the inning, in-ning, Gronkowski came to the plate with no outs and a runner on first. After falling behind in the count, Gronkowski smashed a two-strike pitch over the right-field fence to give the Owlz a walk -off win to the delight of the 4,126 fans at Brent Brown Ballpark. "I'm kind of speechless actually. actu-ally. I le came with a fastball and I just had a chance to hit it out, but it all started with Jeremy getting on base," Gronkowski said. "That's the first time I've hit a walk-off. The team (Casper) was walking off the field with me running by them and it was pretty intense. It was fun, hopefully I get to do that a few more times in the future. Although the Rockies looked stunned, several of the Orem players expressed that they Bruins' Johnson gets Jordan Christiansen SPORTS CORRESPONDENT How much emotion can you put into one kick? Ask senior kicker CJ Garner and the rest of the Mountain View football team. The Bruins won just a single game last year and had already lost their opener last week. The team and head coach Teko Johnson wanted a win some respect so badly it hurt. They earned some on Friday night in Orem. With five seconds sec-onds left against West Jordan, Garner lined up for a 38-yard field goal that helped erase all the bad memories in Mountain View's recent history. With the score tied 14-14, the ball was snapped, the kick went up and Garner sent a perfect arching arch-ing ball through the night sky and between the two posts for three points, giving an ecstatic WfyJh i '1111111- Early Bird Christmas Card Special Order your Christmas cards early, avoid the rush and get EXTRA CARDS for FREE! Manager Tom Kotch-man Kotch-man echoed those sentiments. "Obviously Gordie's been our guy. He's a veteran on this club and he's the leader," Kotchman said. "Sometimes you lead off the field and sometimes some-times you lead on the field and tonight he led on the field." Moore, who scored the tying run, added: "It don't surprise me at all. He's been in a mini-slump mini-slump as ya'll would say, but I say he's a hittin' machine." Gronkowski's big hit was just another milestone in his outstanding season in which he is in the top five in the Pioneer League in batting average, on-base on-base percentage, RBI and hits. "It couldn't happen to a better bet-ter kid," Kotchman said. "He had to go through the back Bruin team the 17-14 victory over West Jordan. The Mountain View sideline side-line rushed the field while the crowd cheered wildly, and no one was more emotional than the Bruin first-year coach. With his hands on his knees and drained in every way possible, pos-sible, Johnson made an attempt to describe how the win felt. "I'm overwhelmed, really," he said. "To have a fight like that, to have courage and heart like that, I really don't know what to say." Garner, in his second year as kicker, described his game-winner game-winner as "probably one of the best feelings ever. I was a little bit nervous, but I had to get up there, stay focused and put it through. It was awesome." After a lackluster first half, and down by 14 points. Mountain View (1-1) needed a spark. Although Gronkowski's homer hom-er was the headlining act for the night, playing a crucial supporting support-ing role were the performances of pitchers Jordan Walden and David Hurst. Walden, who lowered his ERA to 3.58, had yet another solid start. The hard-throwing righthander went seven innings, allowing only four hits while striking out eight. Walden's only mistake was to Scott Robinson on a two-run two-run homer in the sixth inning. I Chukars 6, Owlz 5: At Idaho Falls, the Owlz played nearly two games in one night as they fell 6-5 in 15 innings to the Chukars Chu-kars on Tuesday. There were flashbacks to the 17 inning 5 hour 20 minute af first coaching victory Caleb Loveland lit the match for Mountain View, picking off a deep Jaguar pass for his second interception of the game. Then it was Mounga Time. TJ Mounga, who had just one carry in the first half, seemed inspired in the second, single-handedly single-handedly carrying the Bruin offense and at times the Jaguar Jag-uar defense down the field. At only 5-foot -8, the 185-pound Mounga crashed through the lines, picking up yardage. With the defense's attention on Mounga, Bruin QB Mark Garrett took a fake-handoff misdirection play 19 yards for the touchdown. After another Mountain View interception, this time by Jordan Smith with 6:30 left, Mounga took the handoff on the ensuing play and rumbled 60 yards for a score. Mounga finished with 144 yards rushing on 17 carries. West Jordan (1-1) had one MHiifiiiii fair won by the Chukars 54 on June 23 at Melaleuca Field. The Owlz are now winless in six extra inning games and fall to 11-14 in one run games. Orem wasted a four-RBI night by Jeremy Moore. Moore had a two-run double and two-run two-run homer which was his 12th. Chukars 8, Owlz 1: At Idaho Falls, a five-run fifth inning helped the Idaho Falls Chukars get past Orem on Monday night in Pioneer League play. The Chukars actually scored all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first inning on Clint Robinson's twoout, two-run single. sin-gle. But the Owlz trailed just 2-1 after scoring in the fourth inning on Julio Perez's RBI single. I Rockies 7, Owlz 2: At Orem, it just wasn't the Owlz's day on Sunday afternoon at Brent Brown Ballpark as they lost to the Rockies. Casper, who won only their seventeenth game of the year, has beat the Owlz for the fifth time in 15 tries this season. The Rockies plated three runs in the third inning just before a rain delay that lasted an hour and 25 minutes. t Owlz 1, Rockies 0: At Orem, the Owlz continued their winning win-ning ways with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Casper Rockies Rock-ies Friday night. Orem has won nine of thirteen and added another game on the Raptors in the wild card chase. The Owlz had just five hits and scored the game's only run in the ninth inning. last march down the field, going 47 yards to the Bruin 33 before Cache Morgan's pass fell incomplete incom-plete on fourth down. With 1:13 remaining, Mountain View used Mounga and a 15-yard late hit penalty against West Jordan to get down the field, close enough to set up the winning kick. "You have to figure out a way to create a mentality that you can get what you believe is possible, pos-sible, and that's what they did," said Johnson. "I saw this game in my head last night. I told TJ before the game that he was going go-ing to have the game of his life. And that's what happened. They created a reality and they did it."
