Agreement paves way for ailing conference games on satellite Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) (R-Utah) lauded a deal that might allow millions of more viewers to wratch Mountain West Conference Confer-ence teams play on TV. Under an agreement just struck between the Mtn. sports network and satellite provider DirecTV, Direc-TV, conference games will begin airing on satellite satel-lite no later than Sept. 1. That's none too soon for Hatch, a longtime proponent of ending an impasse that has kept Mountain West games irom airing in many homes in Utah and across the nation. "It looks like we're going to finally have a more level playing field with the other athletic conferences," Hatch said. "Thanks to this agreement, agree-ment, millions of viewers view-ers could be exposed to Mountain West sports for the .first time. This increased exposure can only boost interest in the conference." Currently, only 12 million mil-lion homes have regular access to the Mtn., which was created in September 12006 to broadcast conference con-ference games. As a result, scores of Mountain "West fans who live mrtside Df Utah or don't subscribe to Comcast Com-cast have been consigned to reading about their favorite fa-vorite team in the newspaper news-paper or on the Internet. This deal could change that. DirecTV has roughly 16.8 million customers nationwide, a subscriber base which could allow7 fans in many areas, inside in-side and outside Utah, to catch Mountain West action for the first time since the Mtn.'s creation in a large deal between the conference and CSTV, the Mtn's parent company at the time. Hatch says that's terrificnot ter-rificnot only for alumni alum-ni and athletes of Mountain Moun-tain West schools, but also for parents living far away from the MWC athletic teams on which their children compete.
