Show HAVE INTERESTING TRIP IN THE NORTH Washington County Farmers Return Sunday from Annual Logan Farm Encampment The Washington county party who attended the ninth annual farmers' encampment at Logan last week, returned Sunday after a very Interesting In-teresting and instructive trip. Those from this section who were in attendance at-tendance included County Agent and Mrs. Walter F. Smith, Wilford Schmutz and Bert Bradshaw of St. George; Nephi Workman, Wm. Wilson, Wil-son, J. J. Roundy and Morris Hin-ton Hin-ton of Hurricane; James Z. Naegle, Chas. Fleshier, Wm. Bringhurst, Toquerville; Elmer Gubler and family, fam-ily, Santa Clara; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Cottam, Veyo; Mr. and Mrs. John E. Blazzard, Cedar City. In addition to the above, several boys, interested inter-ested in 4-H club work, accompanied accompan-ied the party. On the return trip, truck gardens, dairy herds, poultry farms, hatcheries hatch-eries and creameries and the growers' grow-ers' market in Salt Lake City were visited. Wm. Wilson took first place in the encampment milking contest, while Mrs. Jas. Cottam proved an expert in the same line, winning the women's wom-en's contest. Washington county placed third in dairy products judging, took second in indoor baseball, and fourth in attendance, at-tendance, The latter is based on number of farmers In attendance from the counties in proportion to the number of farms and the distance dis-tance traveled in reaching the encampment. en-campment. The encampment which came to a close at the U. A. C. college last Thursday, was declared by officials of the extension service, which sponsors spon-sors the gatherings, to be one of the most successful held in recent years. The total registration for this encampment reached approximately 2950. It included farmers from all sections of Utah as well as many from surrounding states. The silver loving cup donated by the National Copper bank of Salt Lake as the county attendance prize, was won by Cache county for the second consecutive time. The county was represented by 1661 persons which gave it a standing of 1.84. The next five counties in order are Tooele, with 68 people, rated 1.53; Davis county, 143 people, rated .94; Washington county, 34 people, rated .90; Boxelder, 308 people, rated rat-ed .86; Morgan, 18 people, rated .82. Wasatch county won first honors in the Holstein judging contests with a score of 585 out of a possible 600. Cache county placed second with a score of 570, while the Utah county team ranked third with 490. The high score judge of the two day contest was Jared Brown of Davis county who made a perfect score of 400. Davis county won first place in the judging of Jersey cattle. The team scored 510 points out of a possible pos-sible 600. The Wasatch county team, came second with 505 points, while the Cache and Utah county teams tied for third with 480 points each. Individual scoring honors were won by Jared Brown of Davis who made a perfect score of 200. Thirteen counties entered teams in this contest. con-test. Davis county scored a second victory vic-tory when their representatives annexed an-nexed both doubles and singles titles in the horseshoe pitching contest. Through the successful efforts of H. G. Talbot and Frank Hyde in defending de-fending both the doubles and singles championships, the silver loving cup was taken to Davis county for the second time. If Davis wins the cup another year it becomes their permanent per-manent property. Results of the cow milking contest con-test were W. G. Wilson, Washington county, first, 16.6 pounds of milk; Merrell Warnich. Utah, second, 15.2 pounds; D. B. Hair. Utah, third, 14.8 pounds; Lcland WTooton, Wasatch, fourth, and James Thain, Cache, fifth. The contestants each milked three cows for a period fo one minute min-ute each. The cow calling contest was won by Will H. Nielson of Utah county. Mrs. Nielsen also proved herself to be an expert yodeler and ranked close behind her husband for second place. Prizes for the contest winners were presented by Director William Peterson of the extension service at a general meeting held as the concluding con-cluding feature of the encampment procram Thursday. Various department meetings were held on the final day in the poultry, dairy, foods, clothing and pasture and , crops divisions. |
