Col. Rondal H. Smith, who has served at Hill since May 1988, was notified Monday of his nomination for promotion to brigadier general, pending approval of the U.S. Senate. Maj. Gen. Dale W. Thompson Jr., Ogden ALC commander, said, "Few events in one's career are more significant than . . the one for promotion to general officer. The promotion for Colonel Smith is based on his outstanding record. "But, he will be the first to admit that a promotion like this is due in a large part to the people you work with. Our Hill work force is outstanding, hard working and brings great credit to our air logistics center every day," the general said. "I was speechless when Gen. Charles C. McDonald, commander of Air Force Logistics Command, called me," Colonel Smith said. "I am honored to he selected as a general officer in the United' States Air Force. "The Air Force is my chosen career. I've had nothing but great assignments, but my time at Hill has certainly been the highlight. Our workers are tops. It is fun to help them work and excel," he said. The colonel, a native of Bristol, Tenn., is known for his country-styl- e humor. He said, "I guess this proves again that the workers at Hill are so good that they can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." Colonel Smith was born Feb. 7, 1944, in Bristol, Va. He graduated from Bristol, Tenn. High School in 1962. In 1966, he graduated from East Tennessee State D See Smith, Page 2, please.
