Wells, jun., askiog the refunding of money paid by him for digging a trench, reported that the petitioner had volunteered to perioral the work, and for this and other reasons, recommended recom-mended that , the prayer be not grauted. The report was adopted.-' The committee to whom was re-, ferred the petition of-XJ. W. Bennett,' and others, asking for the privilege of rentiug the west half of Washington square fur one year, reported recommending re-commending that the ground be rented on the same conditions as those on which the ground was rented last year. The report and recommendations recom-mendations were adopted. An appropriation of $10,000 was made to take up notes due by the city, also $189 for interest. An appropriation of $566.91 was also made to pay for water pipes. An appropriation of $2,000 Wis made to the water work,' fund. A resolution was adopted, giving to all citizens the privilege of erecting carriage steps or platforms in Irontof their places of business or residences, under certain restrictions, the Btepa to be built to the acceptance of the city marshal. The committee on claims reported unfavorably the petition of Mr. Pnilip Margetts, askingremuneraiion for damages to the value of his properly. prop-erly. The reason for the unfavorable report is that the gravel has been carried away by citizens, who had dug away a portion of the street. Tne report also included a recommf nd.i-tion nd.i-tion that the matter be referred to the committee on streets and a I ley a to device a method to prevent further damage to the street. The report was adopted. A motion was then made and carried, referring the matter to the committee on streets and a. leys, in connection with the street supervisor, to have Jordan street graded, where it has been damaged by tbo taking away ot gravel. Collector Winder made another report re-port of the progress made by him in enforcing the provisions of the revenue law regarding the collections of taxes, and asked if the council had ny oug8 tions to offer bim. It was understood as the sense of the council tnat tbe collector should be maintained and supported in his labors, and that ho should prosecute them aB be had done, there being nothing else left for him to do under the law. Dr. S. B Young made a verbal communication to the council, which will be found elsewhere. Tbe council adjourned till next Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock. |
